Hi Ralph - Polyurethane or acrylic varnish will do the trick. Also, you can get tinted wood varnishes which do both with one hit! I would recommend using Ronseal or similar, as it dries quickly.
Ralph if you can get a good sanded finish , then Danish oil will give you a nice satin finish , easy to apply and no props with dust etc.
Colron wood dye will give you an excellent finish also , top this when dry with danish oil
Touch dry in four hours , second coat the following day if you need too .
It is simple stuff and less messy than varnish by far.
Works best on hard woods though as they are close grained, used on gunstocks etc
