I'll be posting progress pics, but here is my reference. I'm doing a ARC Trooper from the Clone Wars animated cartoon. This took place somewhere between the Attack of the Clones movie and the Revenge of the Sith movie. The ARC Trooper is an elite soldier and the one I'm doing is holding a z-6 rotary blaster (looks like a Gatling gun). Here are my references:

I'll post my progress this evening.

Me, too. I watched all the Clone Wars episodes with my boys.

We all loved it. I'll have to show them your sculpt now too

Here's how I started. I got the armature and started putting sculpey together. Sculpey didn't get hard enough to sand very well. But it was good to flush out the main form.

Here's the same figure with the shape more flushed out. He will have the ARC Trooper sash as well as the skirt, but I will do that last. This is primarily done with some Aves Apoxie Sculpt. Red stuff is Bondo, my modeling staple, but not very good for sculpting I found out later.

Here's the last shot. It's the Z-6 Rotary Blaster. I took some liberty with the design, but I thought I'd make it a little more interesting. Balsa wood and Evergreen plastic.

Thanks. I appreciate any constructive criticism. I've learned alot from this first sculpt. I learned alot about what NOT to do. I'm having fun with this one. I tried to pick a big scale, but something simple. I'm trying to replicate the "cartoon" look, so I have some liberty with the sculpt.

Thanks to garyjd for providing some help and inspiration on this one.

Brian, Thanks for the kind words, but the work is all YOURS on this one.
The fact that you're replicating a character from a cartoon does not make it easier than something from life. As a matter of fact in some ways it's harder. I really like where you have gotten to at this stage, the shapes are looking good.. Keep it up! (y)~Gary

M.N.1.M,
I really like your work thus far and can't wait to see more progress. You’ve got the stance and proportion nailed. Translating a 2-d entity into 3-d is always challenging since the original never had a 3-d form that you can reference.

When you begin painting will you go with a “flat-cell” type of shading or a more realistic style? (always the dilemma)

I can’t wait to see more!

I lurk here because I build garage kits rather than traditional miniatures but you may inspire me to post more and lurk less.

Best Regards,
william

William, Go ahead and post some pics of your work. The more the merrier. :) ~Gary

Your Sci Fi figure is coming along nicely, I Like Sci Fi figures and occasionally I paint them.

Looking forward to seeing more of your work.

Cheers
Roc. :)

I'll post some pics soon. This guy has come a long way. But it has much longer to go. I'm very close with the helmet's shape... Then I will scribe the lines. I've almost finished the Z-6 Rotary Blaster... just a little more putty and sanding to go. The body legs are almost done. I've almost finished with the "collar". I have not started his skirt yet.

Here's a small update. I've almost finished with the helmet and rotary blaster. Still having trouble with alot of the fine details. The pose is bothering me a little too.

Brian, Nice to see an update. From what I can see his feet/legs look like they are spread too far apart. It's still a neat figure subject to see on the Planet.~Gary
