Starcraft II: Wings of Liberty, Baneling

So I have started off on a rather ambitious project, sculpting the Baneling from Starcraft II

So far I only have the claw parts of the front legs finished (finished being a relative term)


Here is what the unit looks like

Just curious, but why start with a small detail instead of getting a sense of the overall creature first?

As weird as it might sound I wanted to start with the smallest part because if I worked big and made it to small the small parts would be to hard, especially for the face and it's teeth, if the claws are big the teeth and face wont be as tiny

I am using ALOT of putty even with alot of filler. Im using styrofoam normal kids modeling clay, and sprues as filler. Spent the past week while on vacation working
