Stefano e-mailed me this article which I translated and posted for your pleasure.
I have a particular weakness for the English Civil War, It gives me the opportunity to work on unusual uniforms that I consider to be between Medieval and Napoleonic .
Another element not to under estimate is the color.
Practically civilian clothes worn on the battle field , equipped , particularly for the officers, with various ornaments, ribbons and bows.
It is in this period in Europe that the concept of scientific strategy is applied. One of the more characteristic components of this century is the siege of a city or a castle.
This kind of reminds me of the medieval ; unending sieges in the mud , with hunger and disease.
I believe three words suffice to identify this bellicose period in history: STEEL, LEATHER AND MUD..
The officer that I chose to immortolize, is the result of rigorous study and research on the element of uniforms.
This piece is a sculpture of an officer of the Royalist army, while in midst of battle he risks his life with two pistols drawn and ready to fire.
The sculpture is a uniquely scratch built figure, I started with a metal armature and in short here is the result . For my numerous sculptures ,I use drawings, they help me understand the final results of the pose and because I love to draw!!!
A good understanding of anatomy is fundamental, I start with a nude, which I dress beginning with the trousers; always!!!
I give extra attention to the trousers and the shoes, I’m almost fanatic about this, sculpting well detailed well proportioned shoes give the figure a sense of stability and realism. The rest is good and solid research.
Ciao to all my friends in the Planet and hope you enjoy it.
