Keep positive mate,it will come (y)

I agree Roger. That level of fine detail is hard to paint, (except for the likes of Olga) but I have no doubt you will do a fine job with it. I have an old 54mm Border Miniatures 1695 grenadier, and trying to get the the William and Mary cypher correct is difficult (and still working on it), let alone doing the lettering of a motto freehand. It is beyond my capabilities, but not yours.

I like what you have done already, so hang in there. Looking forward to the finished work.

Cheers
Chris

Three repaints of the motto on the cap today and I'm still not happy. :(
I'm hoping when the white lettering is dry I can tidy it up a bit with the red background colour.

He is looking very good Roger.
The motto does not detract from the bust as a whole, because you are with it day and night it tends to be all that you see.
I recently met a lady who was learning the art of painting Russian Religious Icons using 100% traditional materials and techniques.
The method use by these guys on the very fine lettering is to;
Not have a multi zero brush. A fine brush works well enough.
Lay down tiny dots of your background colour.
Do not drag the paintbrush but gently push the paint at 90 degrees to its final position.

If you do want to thin the letters with the red background colour this may be worth a go.
Cheers
Keith

Thank you keith.
I think you have hit the nail on the head, all I can see is that motto and it has become the be all and end all of this bust. I think I need to give it a rest. It's back to work later this week so I might just leave it alone till I come home again.

That's interesting about the icon painting technique. I was watching a chap on Santorini painting them on holiday last year, I should have asked him about his lettering technique. Time for some further research I think.

Don't let the letters get you discouraged! As others have already mentioned - it'll come!, This is coming along great, and you're doing an excellent job so far (y)

Phil

My dear friend, I completly understand your issue with painting letters......I had the similar problem: at the beggining I have painted the flag upon engraved symbols - it looked like yellow monkey and white t-rex :D:D ....... than I removed it carefully by scalpel and painted it by freehand............ I used acrylic colours, which for me is more comfortable when I want to paint the details - black/brown backround, base and highlights.

Thanks Jozef and funny you should say about removing the cast detail. As I've repainted it so many times the cast letters have almost disappeared under paint and the latest version which has been done almost freehand is the best yet. I did think of removing the cast motto with a scalpel like you suggest but was a bit afraid I might ruin some of the detail I had already painted and want to keep.

Roger

That's looking so much better ...the break obviously worked

Mitre details are very nice indeed ....not much left to do there

Happy painting

Nap

Thanks Kev. yes, the enforced break at sea was what was needed. :D I'm just waiting for the delivery of some new brushes before I attempt the decoration of the lace and then it's off again. :D
