A Fixture
Gordy, Gellso,Carl, Ben much appreciated guys. Really pleased this one has gone down so well as it is a superb bust in every respect and equal to their Maya in quality and originality. Ronnie, my approach to the yellow on the hussar will be to undercoat the whole bust with GW Skull White and leave for 24 hours. Next, give it a couple of thin coats of Vallejo 'Sunny' skin tone, (the whole bust again) and let dry overnight. What comes next is foreign to most figure painters, but common with canvas oil painters, underpainting. This will sound crazy but stick with me. Mix a colour that is a common shadow to all the colours of the uniform. Confused? Ok, the Hussar is primarily red, (if you are depicting the same regiment as Pegaso) so I would use a rusty kind of Sepia mix. Apply this to the whole bust, making sure you get it into every nook and cranny! Let this soak in for half an hour. What follows can be done several ways but what you need to do is to turn the oil coat into a transparent glaze which is darkest in the shadow areas, and barely visible on what would be the hi-lites. It is important that once done you let this dry. From then on you build your colours in successive thin glazes until you reach the required depth of colour. It sounds a lot of work but, once you get to this stage, things move quickly. As for the metallics, yes I do thin them but they are still applied over each other almost like dry brushing. Hope this helps mate.
