Regarding the Pugree "What I forgot to mention this is a first type helmet. You can tell by the one inch wide adjustable band around the helmet. These often get pulled off or lost. The second type helmet has an adjustable pugree band and it often worn with a cloth cover with a large section of fabric that hangs over the back of the neck. Cloth and metal unit badges were attached to the sides of these covers."

" According to Indian Army Uniforms by W.Y. Carman, “The Indian Mutiny caused a great upheaval in accepted traditions and many changes towards a realistic uniform took place. Special headgear and warm weather garments were at last considered and officially approved.” Carman adds that this included the adoption of a tropical helmet for parade and ceremony use when the undress cap could not be worn.
The new permanent style of headgear was a cork helmet that was ordered for European officers in native regiments. Messrs. Hawkes and Co. of London, a company that may have had the original sole patent for making such headgear, was commissioned with the task of producing these first helmets.

Carman also writes that the helmet “was to be covered in white cloth with a regimental pugri (puggaree) and a gilt curb chin-chain.” From 1860, a cork helmet with an air vent at the top was issued to all regiments serving in India. It was this style of helmet that was used during the Abyssinian campaign in 1868 and in the following Ashanti War of 1874 in West Africa. In June 1877, a white helmet of similar design was officially authorized for wear by all ranks throughout the Empire."

It's not impossible that this gent is wearing an Indian Army hat ;)

Well nothing is impossible but I believe the KDG were sent from U.K. not India and general orders stated no pugree for South Africa. He would paint up as a 4th or 7TH DG for the 1882 Egyptian campaign.;):D

Hi Eduardo,
Nice little figure and I certainly don't mind the artistic license, as Martin stated he could be painted up for other campaigns.(y) Officers certainly did wear a variety of gear on campaign and did not always stick to the rules "old boy."
I hope you have lots of other images to inspire your work, if you want to do anything else on this period give me a shout as I have loads of stuff. If you are not aware that photograph is actually of Colonial officers.
Keep up the good work. Looks like I may have a Dragoon in the cabinet to drink tea with in the future.;)
cheers
Richie

May I make the same offer as I also have lots of reference from the time period, if you need it.:) (Especially if you want Life Guards!)

Hi Eduardo,
A 17th Lancer would be a nice idea, maybe discussing over a cup of tea who will be the first to capture the Zulu king Cetshwayo. I will have a think and get back to you. There were loads of other regiments in Zululand at that time as well as all the Colonial units.
What ever you go for give me a shout and I will send you as much documentation as I have, I have between 50-60 books on the Zulu Wars and if I don't have it I know people who will.
cheers
Richie

Her's a 17 lancers officer I made, along with some Natal Native Contingent
