Phil,
I use printer's inks. I start with a darkened almost black (black+ silver, or brown+gold) base color. After leting it dry I paint the most exposed areas with a 50/50 mix of the above colors.
A final setp I going over the most raised areas with either pure silver or pure gold (for bronze).
If needed to show a weathered metal I use a wash of burnt umber and raw sienna in rust prone areas.
