This week I have mostly been painting walls and doors.

I have though had a play with much smaller brushes this evening. Successively lighter highlights on the tunic and trousers. I have painted the white woollen lace on collar and cuffs, done some work on the webbing and his marksmanship lanyard. Also his badger has been given a couple of coats of paint and yes the eyes are meant to be red. Still got to apply a few washes to the tunic to take down the highlights a bit and all the metal work.

I have also been joined at the bench by a very annoying Daddy Longlegs, I suppose now the weather is no longer Scorchio he's come indoors, not a good move on his part.

More emulsion and white gloss tomorrow unfortunately.

Cheers Simon

Hi Simon

Looking good that green works well , nice badger

Enjoy the emulsion and the glossing .....lucky you

Look forward to seeing more on the Jäger

Cheers Kev, had to stop the glossing early today as miss sassy pants is with us this afternoon and she could get grubby in a sterile lab, so I'm at my desk while I can. The green is going to be cut back a bit very soon as I think it is now probably too bright, with the highlights.

Looking very good and yes, nice badger!

Poor badger, never seen a live one, only dead at the side of the road, now I have two, this one and an A&SH sporran.

Cheers Simon

Got some brush time this morning, didnt get too much done, well there's not a lot left to do. I dulled the tunic down a little and painted his bivvy shelter, haversack and waterbottle. Remember this is 1/35th and the images are really enlarged especially if your looking on a laptop or PC, the badger doesn't look so bad at life size and the bits of dust painted on aren't really visible.

Still got the metallics to do and some tidy up and he should be ready for his minimalist base. Unless I've missed something crucial, if so and you spot it please say so.

Cheers Simon

If I'm not mistaken, you'll want to add the Reichskokarde under the right chinstrap post, too. There are later sources that show a state cockade on the left side too, most recently, Chris Dale's "Traditions of the Imperial German Army". While it's a good collection of details about every unit in the German Army up through 1918, its schematic chart shows the Jäger headgear with a state cockade on the left under the post, as well as at the top of the crown. There's an article in an old issue of Military Modelling, too, June 1976, that has a good article on the Jäger battalions, with nice color illustrations. But it, too, shows a Jäger in the pre-1910 field uniform, with the state cockade under the left post, as well as on top. I haven't seen any photos yet, though, to support that they wore 2 state cockades. My source is Pietsch's first volume of his 2-volume "Formation and Uniform History".
It makes sense that they didn't wear 2 cockades. Also, the hussar regiments had the same scenario-they wore a cockade at the top of the crown of their Pelzmütze, the traditional location, and on the left side, they just had a sort of round plaque under the post, it made for a cleaner look.
Hope that helps, prost!
Brad

Many thanks for that Brad, I have somewhere the Mil Mod article so I'll do my due diligence and see what I can sort out. It seems I need to upgrade my reference library if I'm going to do more German subjects, I was toying with the idea of doing a Kurassier in helmet and collet, amongst other things. Going to be a few days before I can get much more time to do things though. The corrections to the helmet will be top priority. Again many thanks for your help.

Hi, Simon, glad to help! And I've been painting the extra cockade on mine for a long time, pretty much based on the illustration in the article. Here's my most recent, a Stadden casting that I painted as a major in the Garde-Jäger:

He's in the popular Stadden pose, pointing at something :D

All of my Jäger have the extra cockade, but I'm not going to go back and fix them at this point. Not right away, anyway. Mostly Staddens, and some Rose castings.

I cheat on the trouser color, too. I just use black. But for my toy soldier style, it works just fine.

Looking forward to your next installment!

Prost!

Again many thanks Brad, I've been looking at some of my references and think I know what to do next. I have never really been comfortable using fresh putty on an already painted figure but needs must. So I'll added the National colours cockade on the right, it's unusual that references contradict each other, that seems to be situation normal for the British Army, the German Army I thought would be much better documented.

With the toy style figures you can cheat with the trousers, I have tried to make them as dark as possible but still retain some blue.

I have not delved into the toy soldier scene, even though it has a large following in the UK, while my eyes are still reasonably good I'll stick with individual models soldiers. I like the one you have posted, I had thought about an officer in the Feldbinde bit it looks a little daunting, just like the marksmanship lanyard in national colours, I did my best with it but the detail is just so fine I think I would be hard pressed painting it in 120mm let alone 1/35th.

Once again many thanks, I would also be interested in seeing more of your collection, I don't recall having seen the Kaisers Armies in toy style before.

Cheers Simon

Cheers Kev, once I add the cockade Brad mentioned he should be just about done.

Yeah, the Kaiser's army is pretty well represented, going back to the classic days of toy soldiers, and up to our time. William Britain had a couple sets of Prussian subjects, one of infantry, and one of hussars (reusing their mold for Danish hussars). The latest maker of finished toy soldiers, not kit figures, was Guard Corps here in the US. They produced sets of several subjects, from American Civil War and the 7th Cavalry, to a Reichswehr band, to their crown jewel, the Kaiser-Alexander-Grenadiers in "The Kaiser's Birthday Parade". That catalog includes the grenadiers in greatcoat order, marching, with NCOs and officers, all 4 battalion colors, and the Musik, fifes and drums and drum major. There was a figure of Kaiser Wilhelm, too, and a reviewing party. Each box included a sheet describing the history of the regiment, and an explanation of the parade order, so you could set up a little parade. I have all but the figure of the Kaiser. That line forms the kernel of my Christmas display, along with Stadden and Rose figures, and Sanderson and Phoenix civilians.

These are from 2017, to give you an idea...

...and these toy soldiers are from a brand called Present Arms:

That was a brand created by a gentleman named Fred Klotz, who was a member and president of our club, the Miniature Figure Collectors of America. Fred did the sculpting, casting, and painting. The series was called "Off to the Front-August 1914", but I include them in the winter parade. He had the troops, sets of civilians, and even a set of cadets with their instructor. And just one more for this threadjack, the soldier in the middle of the photo, holding a mug and resting his foot on a keg, is Fred's one grandfather. He was an artillerist in the German Army in the Great War, then emigrated to the US after. That's Fred's tribute to him.

The other two are from Rose and Jackboot Miniatures, a very jowly Prussian sergeant. And a lot more in the stash, too.

Prost!
Brad

Wow that's a lot of figures, that though you can do with the toys, imagine how long the painting would take if they were all models. Nice with the tribute, always nice having a personal touch like that. I can't say I'm the biggest fan of toy soldiers, more down to the attitude of some of the old and bold who looked down their noses at modellers. That said en-masse they can be impressive. Also at some stage I'd like to model one of the Garde Regts with the brass mitre/grenadier cap but not in a great coat i think.

I knew a bloke who served in the RAF Regiment way back in the 90's when I was at 24 Airmobile Brigade. His father served in WWII in the SS on the Eastern Front, he ended up settling in the UK and even joined the British Army. One of the big national newspapers ran the story a couple of decades ago.

Interesting how soldiers are pretty much the same where ever they come from, it's only the politics and occasionally religion that sets them against each other.

Cheers Simon

Barely worth putting up bit I have added the roundel for the national cockade as pointed out by Brad as an omission. Still got to add the connections for the chin strap though, but not till the Magicsculpt is set.

Been painting another Chota Sahib figure today, hopefully get a suitable base at the Gravesham show tomorrow and then pop him on the completed forum when he's done.

Cheers Simon

Cheers Kev, GMMS was a good show, their first in a number of years. Lots of local clubs including a Medway Veterans group and plenty of traders, though most were peddling plastic kits that I would have loved a few years ago. Only figure seller was Marc Day of Sovereign 2000 with his old Wolf figures alongside his own brilliant resin vehicle kits. Next show will be Letchworth on 22 Oct, another long drive.

Cheers Simon
