Sad. I love the Civil War documentary, and count it as a treasured possession. At least Shelby departed this life having given lots of pleasure to many people, being interesting and informative at the same time. His authority was nothing short of amazing, but this never got in the way of making his narratives really entertaining at the same time. In fact, I'd go as far as to say that his contribution to the whole film in some senses makes it all come alive.
He seemed to have a feeling for the ACW solider that's been an inspiration in my modelling. A sad loss indeed.

Indeed a Sad news :( , many years ago thanks to a school teacher I got a copy(and keep it) of Shiloh, love the story but never read another book of Mr Foote, until I saw his documentary on the ACW, A GREAT LOSS FOR ALL WHO LIKE HISTORY.

Just checking in Amazon found this link to some of his works,

For those wanting to know more about Mr. Footes background check out this multi-part interview with portions of it done in audio. One story I found especially touching was when Mr. Foote was told his father had died when he was only five years old. Most of today's top Civil War historians, though knowledgable come off as nothing more than a dry audio version of a textbook. Mr. Foote had that special something that made relating even mundane things facinating.~Gary

Rather than mourn this great writer and historian's passing, I'd like to celebrate his magnificent achievements! Not the least of which is his 3 volume set on the Civil War. If you've never read it, you're missing a real treat! It's easily the most readable work of American History [or anybody's history!] I've ever devoured. Check it out and don't be intimidated by the size - it reads like a novel and you won't have any trouble finishing it.

All the best,
Dan
