Hi to all ,

Recently myself and SWMBO (Carole) spent a couple of days in Wales after buying lots of books at Hay on Wye we had the pleasure to vist the museum at Brecon.

This was as you can imagine something I was looking forward to and boy was it another great visit(they have revamped the museum since my last visit a couple of years ago) ....

Two people in particular I would like to thank one is the Curator BIll ...an absolute star and a walking book on the Zulu War we were given a tour round with hands on and such a nice welcome ..........

......and of course my long suffering Carole ...thanks for all the pics and for putting up with my constant comments of "this one, that one, those "...all while I was in heaven , making notes on everything possible and drooling.

Among the many artefacts is the actual Union Jack flag flown over Rorkes Drift ...and of course lots of uniforms and other artifacts

Great pics Kev, thanks.

There is definitely a gap in the market for a Volunteer/Territorial Forces/militia figure with all those proficiency badges etc.

Roger.

Now I could not agree more with you ...I have an idea.............And lots of references!!!!!!

Glad you enjoy the pics ...more following later

Thanks for looking in

Now there is of course one medal that is instantly known ..I mean of course the Victoria Cross (VC) .....

You might remember Chris Edwards posting about his father going over for the 70th D Day anniversary ...he served in the Monmouthshire Regt alongside a VC winner who is honoured at the museum , it is of course Ted Chapman VC ...

it was an honour to read his exploit that led to the VC .

No problem on sharing the pictures just goes to show what gems are in the Regimental museums .....

Here is a couple from WW1 note the divisional flash on the back of the uniform (showing in the mirror)

The little teddy bear is particularly moving.

Finally folks we have what to most of us who have been modelling for a while what must be the best diorama from the Zulu War as featured on the cover of MM and inside in July 1975 ......

Totally amazing details great modelling , mostly converted Hinchcliffe figures I think ....

Next to it was a smaller diorama done by the author Ian Knight when he was 14 ....just have to go back to take a picture!

Enjoy the pictures and try and take in all the details in it ..I spent nearly an hour sat in front just drooling .

Hi Nap,
Looks like you had a great time, Bill the curator is a top bloke(y).

Kev, you must have been drooling in that medal room.

Now if you're going to go all that way to Brecon and then mention things like the flag that flew over R.D. then you should get your photo taken next to it:p;)

cheers
Richie

The large diorama was indeed built by Norman Abbey using Hinchliffe figures. I think there were around 200 figures based on just 20 variations in the basic Hinchliffe range which were sculpted by Cliff Sanderson. There were, I think, 3 articles in MilMod around mid 1975 covering the background & building of the diorama including a few conversion ideas. The wagons in the diorama were modified GS wagons from the old Lasset range from Greenwood & Ball.

Many thanks Kev for all the pictures.

Around the time of the MilMod articles the Zulu War & the Crimean War were major obsessions of mine influenced by the Norman Abbey diorama & the Sid Horton Light Brigade articles in the Airfix mag. Now the Crimean War is being covered exhaustively by Moz Corry and it would be fantastic if the Zulu War received similar coverage. Nudge, nudge hint, hint!
