Janne,

The wall is supposed to represent the wall built by the Cherusci to hide behind and surprise the Romans. It is described in any decent book about this event, and there actually is archeological evidence for it. If you like, I can give you some references, let me know.

I must admit I am not particularly fond of this set. In the references, the wall was an elevated earth wall, with wooden top and/or cover with branches. The Cherusci stormed down on the Romans. Here, it is depicted as a log wall with mud cover. Besides, the depicted Cherusci hardly seem to hide behind it. I find the figures quite nice, but I would redo the diorama.
IMHO the set "Surrounded" is the best of the series. More suspense per square cm.

Nice painting by Doug Cohen by the way.

Cheers,
Adrian

Seems to me that this series has been in progress for decades. It will amaze me if anyone has kept their interest long enough to do the whole thing but it would be really near to see all together, finished.

Adrian,
Thanks for the input. All the sources are in agreement that there was a wall. What kind, who knows? I thought Tacitus referred to it as a "wall" that they hid behind to throw spears and other objects at the Romans that were bogged down on the road but I couldn't find the reference today. Don't forget that the wall was put up ahead of time as this ambush was planned well in advance. I have a German friend who was born near the battlefield and he tells me the scholars are still arguing about different aspects of the battle. There was a donkey carcass found by the wall.
You are correct to change the diorama as you see fit. Its just not practical to do a kit with everything. The 2 scouts behind the wall with the German Auxilliary Officer betrayed their Roman hosts, an event that we know happened. The Aux. Officer also comes with a shield in lieu of the arm up.
"Surrounded" was going to be a single kit. So many people wanted more that Jim Corless, the original owner, kept creating more with Chris Tubb. It was hard to keep creating single kits that stand on there own while they still had to puzzle piece with the others. There was just a completed version of all 17 kits at the Chicago Show last year. This kit completes Jim's vision and hope it ignites other people for their own.
Doug Cohens the bomb!

Colin,
There is a German museum in Minnesota that has the whole diorama done by Kevin Townshend. There is also a huge statue of Arminius up there too as there was a huge German immigrant settlement in the area.

A question? And dont get me wrong I like these sets. But what is that logwall supposed to be? Why would it be built that way and what are the sources for it?

Cheers
Janne Nilsson

Janne,
This particular wall was taken from Tony Clunn's idea of an ambush wall close to the swamp. He was the retired British officer that discovered the location of the battle. It is now thought that it might have been a kind of retaining dyke used for the ambush.
The last time I seen you was at Maggiano's in Boston in 2005.(y)

And a follow up. Are all Time-Machine figures resin now?

Cheers
Janne Nilsson

All new kits are resin. Some of the older sets are half and half, mostly the weapons, as I got a lot of individual parts in metal when I bought the business.
Right now it looks like I'll make Stresa.

I like this actually, it's nice. Perhaps only if you have the space. No criticism really, but they aren't hidden are they, I'd be in the shit with my sword and helmet popping over the top. I'd drop them a bit more I think. Cool though, my period of interest!

Here's some references that may be interesting. They're from the book 'Die Varusschlacht' by Rainer Wiegels, in German. A most interesting book about the famous battle, its background and archeology. i hope they don't mind me showing a few pictures from the book here.... It's a nice book with lots of pictures, so even if German is not your strongest language I can recommend it.

First one shows a reconstruction of the wall as built in the museum in Kalkriese, Germany: an earthen wall with thatchwork on top.

Second picture is a drawing from the archeological work, showing the zig-zag layout of the wall. A prominent feature was an adjacent drainage trench on the high side of the wall.

Third pictures show traces of the wall in the ground: Drainage trench as a dark triangle in the top picture and dark line in the bottom one. The small dark spots in the middle of the bottom picture are thought to be remains from the thatchwork breastwork (if that's the correct word?).

It must be said that the historical evidence is patchy. There were a lot of battles in the area and although the controversy about the site is much less strong than before, it is still not 100% certain that this was THE site, although the case seems quite convincing to me.

Hope this inspires to get the kit and build the dio Bob!

Cheers,
Adrian

Adrian,
Good stuff!!
I'll make this offer right now. If anyone buys the kit, TW-18, I will throw in 2 free figures from the series that are not in TW-18. All they have to do is mention they seen it on Planetfigure.

I have several pieces of this series and this year I'm going to give a serious effort in getting them started. I have about a half dozen glued together and almost ready for priming. Bob, is there any way I can get the figure in the ox cart throwing the vase over the side? I know that the first fifty sets had him included and this was one that I was going to try and find in Atlanta this year.

Tom,
Send me your address via my e-mail and I'll send you one. Yes, he is not in the box art and Jim was putting him in as a bonus figure for TW- 11. I have a couple extras.
