I have just received issue number 4 of “Traditions”, the new French bi-monthly magazine for military historians and modellers. As with previous issues it is very well presented on high quality gloss paper with copious illustrations, photos, maps and drawings, mostly in colour. A wide range of articles covering different interests, including:

  • The lead article is on the French expedition to Mexico in 1861-1865 and it includes some excellent uniform references and plates, including a couple by Leliepvre. Our old friend Ian Burton of Ellie’s Miniatures will be greatly interested in this one!

  • The British army greatcoat of the Napoleonic Wars;
  • The Battle of Fleurus of 1794;
  • The Gendarmes d’Ordonnance à Pied, a very short-lived Napoleonic unit;
  • The court martial of Marshal Bazaine.

All in all, an excellent read and some great inspiration for modellers, not least covering units and events not widely known here in the UK. Price is 9.80 Euros from www.lelivrechezvous.fr. It has my recommendation and is a very worthwhile investment. Annual subscriptions are available.

My french is not good enough to get the most out of this - but visually excellent. An English language version would no doubt pay the publishers dividends.
