I am seriously looking at the viability of the 54mm range, which since brexit and EU Import changes has fallen off a cliff. I have more to come but the way I sell them is under serious review. Sad but true !!!

Hi Stuart,

I love the hussard. Probably my next buy.
I just finished the welsh guy at Minden, and I must say I start to be a big fan of your figures.
What is problem with 54 as Jay mentioned ? The fee in proportion to price ? I must say that I don't buy anything from UK since Brexit, as I end up paying more taxes than the figure price.... can't a distributor in EU solve that ?

Interesting what you say about 54mm. I must say I find 75mm a more attractive scale for single figures these days as they have the character of 54s but are a bit easier to paint.

Having only just come back into figure painting and discovering Troop54 for the first time that is disappointing to hear. Then again I wouldn't commit to buying everything and you have a living to earn from this, so you must do what you must do.

54mm figures I absolutely love but the effort is the same for a 75mm. The sales of the above 2 figures show me what the problem is....its about 2 to 1 in this case in favour of the 75mm.
I come from a family of greengrocers, my dad once told me if carrots are a penny a pound then to make a pound you need to sell alot of carrots.

54mm figures are like carrots, you need to sell more which I always did.
I have resellers in the EU but at 40% discount you need to shift more, alas this is less too.

I watch other producers and follow the trends, its apparent that if you sell for a limited time sales are so much better but these sellers are also within the EU. I have some fantastic customers from within the EU and value their support greatly. I always assist them with lower values and gift for a better outcome at customs. EU companies do this when I buy likewise. If they don't they loose my buisness.

There seams to be a shift which is out of my control. Sales numbers talk and if you don't listen there is a problem.

The future is likely to be limited sales releases only available from me until the molds die. I'm not going to stop but just adapt to the changes in the market and to my work life balance too.

Some interesting economic and sales information about the scale differences and irrespective, please don't stop producing these superb figures. Speaking of which, can the new Hussar seen here be built (without) the cloak..?

Interesting to hear of your challenges. I know another model company whose business has been affected by Brexit, they too have to use resellers in the EU which means a much lower margin for them.

I would say go for 75mm. It's definitely a better scale for single figures in terms of ease of painting (as it appears many historical figure painters are older modellers) and they look better on the display table IMO. I think you can still paint them using the same techniques as 54s.

The limited edition is a very sensible idea IMO. It forces us to buy them and get them in the grey army. I still have your wonderful British heavy dragoon in the stash that I bought at Euro Miniature Expo in 2017.....

Nice releases, as to the 54mm vs 75mm totally agree TFB went for 75mm it’s a good scale and as you say the production is about the same. We have managed to secure retailers in the EU which gets round some of the issues with sales. We do have a strong customer base who come direct and we do our best to give them the best deal we can. Customs are a nightmare that’s for sure but it is what it is.

Doing shows in Europe can work, having the vast amount of our casting done within the EU we can pick up our stock at events and package them at the event. It works any that’s left we sell to our distributors or we bring what’s left back. It works for us.

Limited time scales is something we will be looking at in the future with some not all of our releases.

Unfortunately not Gary the shoulder cape and body is sculpted and cast as a single piece with just the main part of the cape to be added. But don't let it out you off buying one it is a superb figure. I will take mine (which arrived this afternoon) to the Bash next Saturday for you to look at.

Too bad the hussar is not in 54 mm as well . I am surprised about the issues relative to the different scales.

Thanks for the explanation, Stu. For what it's worth, if a choice has to be made between 54mm and 75mm, I definitely prefer the slightly larger scale. As I age, my eyes aren't what they once were. Best wishes for ongoing success in the business.
