Thanks to my trip to Euro my enthusiasm to get stuck into some new projects has peaked and as a result I’ve made a start on another recent purchase from Bonaparte’s Miniatures which I’m going to run alongside their Trumpet Major Chevalier Gardes. It’s a vignette entitled Trumpeters to the Rescue and features an Officer of the Westphalian Garde du Corps being rescued from his downed horse by a trumpeter from his regiment and a trumpeter of Westphalian Cuirassiers. This was featured in the Figure news section towards the back end of last year and there seemed to be some favourable reactions to the set. Once again it’s a sculpt by Alan Ball in 90mm and again it’s a cracking piece. The horse is a one piece casting save for a saddle holster and some small pieces of metalwork and strapping. The figures are in the main single cast but each trumpeter needs the arms attaching and the officers arms form part of the trumpeters arm castings with metal inserts to provide extra support when the three come together. Detail is really crisp and the only filling required was a couple of casting holes on the horse.

So far I’ve made a start on the horse in oils. I’ve decided to try something different for me and go for a dark grey horse as opposed to a bay/chestnut. I thought it might contrast a bit more with the uniforms and also accentuate the officers status as part of an elite regiment by being a bit out of the ordinary. In the release thread the reference was to a trumpeter of the 1st Cuirassiers but I might do him as the 2nd who had orange tunics with a dark blue plastron and white lace. It’s my first attempt at using Darkstar’s metallics for some of the metal work on this project.

Interesting and a great idea although the horse looks a little too stilted to me: almost like a standard standing horse lain on its side.
Hi Neil, thanks for looking in. I think the attitude/position of the horse was queried in the preview of the kits release. I can see what you mean. It may soften up once I build some groundwork up around it.

Interesting. What base color did you use for helmet's metal/brass parts?
Hi Jaybo, the silver metalwork is Darkstar metallics, a combination of their colours Baroque, Steel and Pewter on a black base. The pictures just show the basecoat of Humbrol 93 Desert Sand for the brass parts. Hope this helps.

Sorry, forgot to say that it's a good start and I look forward to seeing the final thing.

PS: where's the review?

Thanks Neil. When I was researching the uniforms it brought up a post from November last year on this forum covering its release by Bonaparte’s and some members commented at that time.

Another great start Neal...its really refreshing to see something different again ...do you ever sleep mate..lol..;)...Mike
Thanks Mike. It’s nice to do something a little less mainstream subject wise every now and again. Enjoying trying to research these but managing to keep up with my beauty

I’ve been working through this a bit more and managed to move things on a bit since my last post. The horse is not far off done, just some work around the saddle, the addition of another holster and the stirrups, straps, reins etc. The figures still need work on the boots, breeches and accoutrements and the Officer also needs his plume attaching. I’m going to use the pre-cast base that comes with the kit but re-do the groundwork. I’m hoping to get a wooden base made up to mimicking the pre-cast shape as I think it keeps everything right composition wise.

Looking good, how do find the Darkstar metallics
Thanks Bob. As regards the Darkstar paints, so far so good. I’ve got three colours for the steelwork, a base, a shading tone and then the highlight colour, all acrylics. Coverage is good and there doesn’t seem to be the graininess I was finding with the oils. Still learning with them yet Bob.

Hi Neal

That's a nice looking diorama and good looking details on the figures

Do like the painting of the horse and the trumpeters uniform very colourful and a nice contrast to the armour of the officer

Thanks for sharing

Look forward to more

Nap

Why not put something into FOTM as well ?
