Hi to all at planetFigure!

This is my first review, so, any comments and critics are more than welcome!:)

It is my pleasure to review the upcoming UP Miniaturen 1/10th bust of Kaiser Wilhelm II with the Garde du Corps helmet and cuirass.

Rev20.jpg

The History

I think that any historic background about the Kaiser is unnecessary. :)

The regiment of the Garde du Corps was raised in 1740, to provide personal escort to the King of Prussia. After the "unification" of the german armies in 1871, it become the personal escort of the Kaiser, with characteristics of a Cuirassier regiment, but with a elite selection process.

Here, a photo of Kaiser Wilhelm and the parade outfit of the regiment

Rev25.jpg

Curiously, in this photo, the Kaiser´s shrunken left arm is quite visible, which was rare in official photos.

Here, a photo of the Kaiser wearing the helmet with parade eagle.

The Piece

It comes in the traditional UP Miniaturen box. Two plastic bags, protected by styrofoam, with only four pieces: the main body, the Kaiser´s head and the base of the pedestal, all in resin, and the helmet eagle in white metal. A instruction sheet in german and english completes the kit (click on the photos, so they will appear larger).

The details of the fine Ulrich sculpture: the aiguilettes, the scarlet lining of the cuirass, the cuirass hinges, the bandolier, sash and medals and, finally, the amazing detail of the epaulette.

The Uniform

In this bust, the Kaiser is wearing the Garde du Corps koller under the cuirass. The koller is white, with red lining. The collar is red with silvered embroidment in the central line. The epaulettes are also silvered.

Rev26.jpg

The black polished parade cuirass was presented to the Garde du Corps in 1897, to commemorate the anniversary of Kaiser Wilhem I´s birth. The cuirass for officers had golden hinges, with oakleaves in the locks.

It was held with a black leather belt, and had a scarlet thick lining around it, which had been nicely sculpted in the bust

Rev21.jpg

The medals that the Kaiser is wearing are the Star of the Black Eagle order, the great collar of the Hohenzollern House Order and the Protector´s Cross of the protestant Order of Saint John (the Protector´s Cross had a sword and a scepter, the one in the photo is only a example)

Rev27.jpg

The kaiser is also wearing golden aiguilettes, the orange satin sash of the Black Eagle Order and the bandolier of the Garde du Corps, which wore silvered with red stripes.

Rev28.jpg

Finally, the beautiful Garde du Corps parade helmet. It has the traditional "lobster tail" back of a cuirassier helmet, plus the Star of the Black Eagle order on the front. For parade purposes, it was used the white-silvered eagle with a gilt crown. Please note the left cockarde in the national colors, and the right cockarde, in the prussian colors.

This will be a certain "must have" kit for me as I continue to build a collection of busts from this period. Very nice details and this review adds to the research knowledge required to properly paint these great little kits. Ulrich does a fantastic job of sculpting these historical portraits and his research details on the included sheets leave no stone unturned. Highly recommended!

Your reviews should be bundled in book form. I wish some company would produce this product line in full figure version 54-75mm scale. I'm not good enough to tackle bust scale skin tones!

Thank you for the compliment, but this is my first review. I think that you confused me with Kevin. :)

Hi Filipe ,

Not a problem ..I enjoyed the review a lot ,thanks for the info on the pm .

Have you anything on the coat he is wearing ?

Tony,

In book form a nice compliment but I ...... need to work a lot more on the reviews before then!!!! ..why not just copy and paste into a word document for reference or keep a note of the posts details.

Tradition did a full figure version of this a long time ago ..perhaps UP might also do one ..it would be a cracker (note use of festive word !!!!!)

Regards and best wishes

The Kaiser is wearing the Umhang, a officer´s cloak.

The collar was in regimental colors. In the case of the Garde du Corps, it was white piped red when folded down, or red, when collar turned up.

In the case of the bust, the collar is folded down, so, it should be painted in white with red pipping. The umhang itself is grey.

Here, a photo of the Kaiser wearing the umhang hanging from his shoulder, just like in Uli´s bust. Unfortunately, the quality of the photo is not so good, but if you zoom it up, you can see a slight difference of tones in the collar area.

Hope that it helps. :)

Anything else, just ask.

Best regards from Brazil

Filipe

Ps: I have the Tradition full figure of the Kaiser, is in a very old fashion, not very detailed. If you want, i can post some pictures.

Hi Filipe ,

Thanks so much that is great info , I have seen the Tradition figure ..a long time ago , it would be interesting to see what its like !!(y)

I could keep posting all day but work calls :p so will catch up later tonight

Kind regards

Kev

Nice bust that I will buy. Must note in the photos that bandolier of the Garde du Corps shown in the photo set with 4 red stripe is not correct for this bust of the Kaisers uniform with the special black cuirass. The 4 red stripe bandolier it is not worn Garde du Corps of the period.. The correct belt is shown in the photo of the Kaiser wearing the black cuirass, the bandolier is silver with red piping on the edges, the buckles are silver.

I painted the Tradition figure long long ago (and also far, far away), using D.S.V. Fosten's Cuirassiers and Heavy Cavalry, Almark: 1972. The book is still available, used, at Amazon for under $10. It has some excellent photos and colored illustrations by R.J. Marion and is an essential reference for anyone interested in the Imperial German heavy cavalry between 1900-1914.
Edit: I just checked the Tradition site and found that the 90mm white metal figure of Wilhelm II, RC90 037 is still available for about 25 quid. At half the scale size of the bust, it obviously has less detail, but the helmet eagle was very nicely done and cast seperately.
