To avoid any unrest, I would like advice on what colour for this. I've seen some in the mustard that I painted the 101st in, also khaki and olive drab. So which ones right?
Thanks,
Carl.

Hi Carl,

There's a book that's perfect for doing this figure..

http://www.amazon.co.uk/American-Wa...r_1_11?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1289689164&sr=1-11

....but at 38 quid you might not be tempted. It's full of large clear photos of the 101st and 82nd boarding C-47's on the 5th of June, plus mannequins wearing original pieces of uniforms and kit. I could scan the photos of original kit and email them if you like, but of course the uniforms are washed and faded from their original (and anti-gas impregnated) colour. Some troopers also dabbed black paint all over their uniforms as a basic night camo. I've got this figure also so I'm watching with interest!

Cheers,
Jon.

You've got a little leeway on this like most US WWII uniforms. Vallejo Khaki is a pretty close bet. I used to really like Humbrol Midstone, or ModelMaster SAC Bomber tan.

Carl,

John is right you have a lot room to go with on this color. The only ones that I have ever had to questiion were the ones that had a strong yellow them.

I had great success with VJ 821 German Camo Beige.

Thanks for the replies chaps. The 101st that I did looks a hell of a lot more yellow in the photos, the colour is called US khaki mustard. It's more like the centre photo in the resin.
Cheers,
Carl.

Gotta love the different colors of the magnificent Olive Drab #3 (Mustard).

I have 2 original M42 Jump jackets, one is more of a Pea Green and the other is a Yellow-Khaki. Both are dated 1943.

One thing I will say, if you look at the field pictures in color you'll notice that most of the webbing is OD #7 (Typical Olive Drab, darker green) rather than khaki. A lot of reenactors and Hollywood tend to make everyone wear khaki web gear but the reality is that green was more and more common by D-Day.

I'm struggling to find anything on the bottle tied to his left leg, colours, or what it is. It looks like a hip flask.
Cheers,
Carl.

This will be a nice figure Carl. One of the things I keep in mind when painting figures is context. In the context of the figure, if you are close...you are right when it comes to color. I think if you tried to paint that color on a german paratrooper, it would be wrong. But given the context of the figure as a paratrooper of the 101st. The colors, given the variance of weathering, dye lots etc had some variation and as long as you are close to what ever reference you are using, people looking at your figure will say "thats a great looking US airborne figure". Paint his uniform blue and they will say "WTF?"
