Historical Note:

US Navy Corpsman John “Doc” Bradley was assigned to Co. E, 28th Regt of the 5th Marine Division for the invasion of Iwo Jima. The invasion started on February 19, 1945. On February 23, 1945, a reinforced platoon scaled Mt. Suribachi to planet the American Flag. A first flag was raised by Lt. Schrier, Plt. Sgt Thomas, Sgt Hansen, and Cpl Lindburg. “Doc” Bradley was also present but was not in the first flag raising. Later a second larger flag was raised and this is the flag raising that “Doc” participated in. The picture of the flag raising by Joe Rosenthal is one of the most famous pictures of WWII. “Doc” Bradley was later awarded the Navy Cross for his action on Iwo Jima. The Bradley Family never knew their father received the medal. It was found in a box after his death. The figure depicts “Doc” Bradley in a moment between the two flag raisings, peering down at the island and ships.
