A bit o'tweaking on the face today and the eyes begun:

Started on the "second ring" of colour as I work my way outwards from the face; the cap and shirt basecoated along with the hair.

Still waffling on whether the shirt should be the olive colour or not; it could also be a light tan colour, although the olive one appears in more of the photos of crews I've seen. Either way, the tie will be a slightly darker tan/khaki colour.

Easter greetings all; a bit more progress on the pilot. Finally decided to go with the OD shirt and went ahead with the oils on it and the garrison cap. Also added some woolly texture on the cap:

Added the acrylic undercoat for the A-2 flight jacket as well:

It's hard to comprehend that the little resin head you had has been used so well

Thanks, Mark!

Let me return the compliment! Without such an amazing collaboration between you and Sid, this conversion wouldn't be going half so well as it is so far - the head is the perfect fit for this project. Thanks again for the great service in resizing your product for just what I required!

Cheers,
Brian

Hi all,

A bit of work done on the A-2 jacket. Over the acrylic undercoat I laid in Burnt Umber for shadows and Burnt Sienna for highlights (W&N oils), blending them to get my base leather colour wih a small bit of mottling and contrast:

Added a tiny bit of White and a touch of Naples Yellow to the Burnt Sienna and went over the highlight areas again, bumping up the contrast a bit more. At this point I'm almost scrubbing the colour on, really blending and stippling the highlight colour to give the leather a bit of wear overall. I'll leave the shadow tone as is for now until after the next highlight and wear pass:

That's it for now - cheers.

Hi Brian

Great description of the leather...looks good so far ....I'm going to keep the details !

Was the acrylic undercoat a Burnt Umber ?

This is a great idea , you'd never know the originals .....

Thanks for sharing

Looking forward to seeing more

Happy benchtime

Thanks, Nap - very kind of you as always. And yes, the undercoat was a Burnt Umber craft acylic (Americana brand, I think).

Cheers,

Brian

Did another pass at highlights on the jacket. Used Burnt Sienna again with a little White and Naples Yellow added - virtually the same tone as the first set of highlights but as I was applying them to areas that were already lighter, it served to lighten those areas a tiny bit more. Again, I used a scrubbing, almost drybrushing technique but since I was using oils, the scrubbing also spread out, blended and faded the highlights nicely:

For now, I'm happy with the look of the jacket. Time to work on the headset a bit while the jacket sets up.

Thanks for checking in.
Cheers,
Brian
