Was just wondering I am in the market for buying some metallic paints and have seen the ones on offer by Vallejo, has anyone used them and are they any good, looking for smooth pigment and good coverage and of course a fairly realistic result.
Any other recommendations would be appreciated also.
I do have some GW metallics which I find very good.

Cheers

Steve

Do have some in my sets, you want me to do a test strip with some painted on for you to see?

The bees knees of metallics are these, have some of these too, but never have used them

Tony, yes please if not too much trouble mate.

Ron, I wasnt aware there is a alcohol based version,do they have different labels from the water based? I am just after something I can mix with water much like the normal Vallejo.
I like what you have done with the La Hire bust, seems just what I need from those results.

Cheers

Steve

Hi Steve, The alcohol ones come in a different bottle with fancy labels. Stick to the normal range. In my experience they are only too thick if not mixed properly, (shaken well). Even 'Bronze' which appears thick even after shaking, thins very well with a small amount of water. Distilled water is better for the metallics, but not essential. In the end it all comes down to personal choice. Try them and see mate.

Cheers

Ron

colours are old gold, gold, silver, metal, brass and gunmetal i think.

Carl, cheers mate I do happen to like the GW metallics just wondered if Vallejo would be better.

Steve, Thanks mate

Ron, I think I will give them a go and see.

Tony, many thanks mate I can get a good idea for the colours now and coverage, much appreciated.

There are more than that, they are game colours, trouble is i have soo many Vallejo paints, i have 3 off those vallejo full box sets, the plastic case ones and also a box with another 96 in i got of :)

Not sure which Vallejo range you were looking to get Steve but the VMA metallics are finer-grained than the VMCs (although one or two of the colours in the range are a bit off from what you'd expect going by the name). I believe the VMAs cover better too, never compared them directly myself though.

For plate and other larger expanses of metal you can't do much better than Alclad 2. If you prep right and apply them well you can genuinely get the thing look like metal (instead of something painted with metallic paint!) but you have to airbrush them and for cleanup you'll be using cellulose thinner which is nasty stuff to use in a domestic environment.

Good ol' Humbrol Metalcote is still worth considering too, especially since you can both brush or spray them on. Treated right they can give results nearly as good as some of the Alclad colours.

Einion

Thanks Einion, I had not thought about using the Humbrol Metalcote, I remember seeing them used previously with very good result once buffed up, you have just given me another option.

The Alclad 2 do look the best but a lot of work for only small areas of metal that I will paint.

Many thanks

Steve

I use VMA and VMC because as Einion said the colours vary. The Model Air colours have a lot smaller pigment so look better on 32-54mm mini's but if you work hard with the Model Color, i.e. use lots of thin layers, then the same effects can be done.

I know I'm a little late I'm replying but would like to confirm,
VM alcohol are finer and dry faster I think , I like these so far!

VM colour are a little more heavy but if thinned are fairly nice too.

Have some Citadel too but don't have any experience yet but hear they are great!

I've even used Enamels before now and I've had pretty good results with them too. I've drybrushed with these and have a pretty good results. Mixed them with oil paints for smoother finish and effects.

Hope that helps with my limited experience . Karl
