This is another Derek Holmes sculpt for Verlinden, with a face very similar to the archer I completed recently. It depicts a member of the British 5th Infantry Regiment during the American War of Independence:

I've painted the face so far:

I think this is a better sculpt than the archer, with less wrinkling on the cheeks, which is always hard to paint. I did remove the rather thread-like eyebrows, which looked exactly like glued-on lengths of string, and painted in a better shaped pair.

The rest of the figure:

All very nicely detailed, including the four-part cap. I'm not a complete fan of the way this sculptor depicted drapery, so there may be problems later when I get to the coat, particularly at the back. Fortunately, I have lots of red paint in the box.

I really will be watching this with interest as I too am working on this bust, (well when I say working, I really mean it’s been knocking about on my bench for a good couple of months, but now I’m inspired!) but I’m in the process of adding arms and hands which will be holding one of Tony Barton’s magnificent muskets in 1/6 scale. Although these figures are marketed as 1/5 scale I think they are closer to 1/6……….close enough to match the musket anyway. The musket looks huge in the photo, but that’s just poor perspective!
I also believe the lace at the top of the sleeves needs looking at. My sources suggest these should be wings with lace although none of the sources seem to agree on the actual pattern. See the example Peter attached.

Nap - Welcome aboard.

Mike - Another oldie but goody.

Nigel - The addition of the arms really makes the bust spectacular - wish I had your skills. Looking forward to seeing how yours comes along. As for the arm lace, I also found this:

Who knows?

Henk - I wasn't going to blog this so that you would all have a rest from me, but it's become part of the process.

ooh that's a MUCH better sculpt from Derek- probably one of his best. And of course an excellent treatment from yourself!
Don't stop blogging- we'll get worried!

Neil - Still a bit odd, but a lot more convincing. I do find them nice to paint as well, probably because the stylised sculpts suit a stylised paint job.

Marcin - I'm lucky to now have the time to dedicate to the hobby. That and a very tolerant wife! Glad you like him so far.

Anybody interested in old Verlinden busts and 120mm figures? I found an Italian website (spinoff of Amati) that carries a lot of Verlinden stuff......Napoleon generals busts, ACW cannons, lots of 120mm fifures et cetera.

They are good and prices are reasonable, I got a Union ACW 12 lbs gun post with 4 figures at 60€

Anyone interestd, I will provide the link

ciao

Renato - All of my recent figures have been bought from there. I found them about a month ago, and I must say that the service is excellent.

Oh, this is really shaping up nicely. Black and reds can be tricky, but you nailed that hat.

morning Peter

Super work on the head and hear gear and its good to see your updates too.

Keep it up, I appreciate it and its always good to see how the figure changes too, as you tweak it along the way.

Have a good day with the reds, you know you love it!

Regards

Hi Peter

The head with helmet looks good for sure ...looks like you've tweaked the face a bit .....nice

Get your brushes ready for the uniform ...going to be a lot of red paint !....but will look good

Happy benchtime

Morning Steve

I must admit that the mojo for this one has ebbed a bit, don't know why. I'll try an revive it today, but if not, I may put it aaside for a bit and work on a figure instead.

Hi Nap

Yes, I've worked a bit more on the face, mainly adjusting the tones under the cap peak and around the eyes. I'm going to leave it alone now. Thanks for looking in.
