The only suggestion I can make is maybe adding a soldier to the empty space in the right front corner, directly in front of and below the horse (maybe feeding it an apple?). A figure there could serve to guide the viewer's eye up to the horse and then to the king.
First of all - interesting project, and I'm going to follow this topic with lots of interest !Originally posted by Jason W.@Nov 26 2004, 12:55 PM
Gary,
Ooops! You know, I originally planned on him being another cuirassier... now that you have me thinking...he would probably make a better Bavarian- to balance out the variety of uniforms. This brings up another question-did Bavarian soldiers look up the King to show that much effection? From what I've read they where not well respected allies of Prussia. Am I looking too deep into this?
Thanks Johan! I read Geoffrey Wawro's "The Franco-Prussian War: The German Conquest of France 1870-1871", a VERY good read by the way. Anyway, whenever he mentions Bavarian soldiers he makes them sound like second class soldiers, so this puzzles me as well. However, I still like the idea of the Bavarian (they're in the painting!), perhaps he has enthusiastic curiosity! Again, the intermingling of the two Prussians in the back and the cuirassier with the white coat in front and the Bavarian with the medium blue in the middle, will make a colorful section of the diorama for sure.Originally posted by garyjd@Nov 26 2004, 01:18 PM
This is definitely the site to come to when doing such a project. It gives you the chance to present your idea and in some cases make it an even better composition before completing the figures.~Gary

How about trying to 'bend' the figure in the front right corner to the inside instead of the outside. The way he is posed now, it seams to draw away from the rest of the scene, while if he was 'bend' towards the crowd that would lead you in more so to speak. Every other element of the vignette is pulling you into the center except that one
