I have to agree, this is going to be a fantastic diorama, very impressive indeed.
lookiing forward to your next step.

Keep up the good work.

Roc. :)

Jason, that's going to be a great vignette. Your most ambitious yet?

The only suggestion I can make is maybe adding a soldier to the empty space in the right front corner, directly in front of and below the horse (maybe feeding it an apple?). A figure there could serve to guide the viewer's eye up to the horse and then to the king.

Thanks Marc, Dave and Roc!

Steven,
Thanks for suggestion my friend, it's very much appreciated. To be honest, there is not much room in front of the horse for another figure, and I don't want to draw too much attention away from the main focal point-the King and the soldier shaking hands. My objective is to show some euphoria of a great victory for Prussia and it's allies. It's not every day the King rode out to rub shoulders with his "subjects" and a gentle scene, like feeding the horse an apple, would detract from that excitment of "being" with the King. Besides, if I where soldier in the field, living on hard biscuits and salt-pork, I'd want that apple for myself!

Gary,

Ooops! You know, I originally planned on him being another cuirassier... now that you have me thinking...he would probably make a better Bavarian- to balance out the variety of uniforms. This brings up another question-did Bavarian soldiers look up the King to show that much effection? From what I've read they where not well respected allies of Prussia. Am I looking too deep into this?

First of all - interesting project, and I'm going to follow this topic with lots of interest !

About your question of including a Bavarian ... I'd like to find out too if Prussians and Bavarians really were "close friends" on the battlefield ... they were allies, sure, but I always thought their armies operated separately. And I believe Bavaria did have their own king, just like the other smaller allies had their own head of state. By the time of Sedan Wilhelm I was KING of Prussia, and not yet emperor of Germany. So I don't know ...

Jason , my eyes will be wide open to follow this one come to life. Make sure you post a lot of pics please. I think Gary's suggestion makes alot of sense. In fact before reading it and after seeing the pics I was alittle nagged by that particular figure. Nonetheless , you need something to give the impression of 'continuation ' beyond the base. Good luck on your ambitious project and have fun

Jason, Unfortunately I'm not sure how they felt about the King, an interesting point thouh. The Franco-Prussian war is something I have little knowledge of. I do like the idea of a little variety among the troop types. Maybe a Prussian Artilleryman would work. This is definitely the site to come to when doing such a project. It gives you the chance to present your idea and in some cases make it an even better composition before completing the figures.~Gary

Hey Jason!

Great project my friend! This is going to be a real whopper once completed and I sure hope to be able to watch it in the flesh one day.

Keep up the great work!

Looks like an impressive start, keep up the good work. Can't wait to view your progress.
Regards callum.

Thanks Johan! I read Geoffrey Wawro's "The Franco-Prussian War: The German Conquest of France 1870-1871", a VERY good read by the way. Anyway, whenever he mentions Bavarian soldiers he makes them sound like second class soldiers, so this puzzles me as well. However, I still like the idea of the Bavarian (they're in the painting!), perhaps he has enthusiastic curiosity! Again, the intermingling of the two Prussians in the back and the cuirassier with the white coat in front and the Bavarian with the medium blue in the middle, will make a colorful section of the diorama for sure.

Thanks Stephen!

Gary, I agree, this is the best place to go for suggestions and ideas. There was no way I was going to tackle this without some in-put by so many helpful hobbyist. :)

Thanks Anders! Your right! Even though the base is only 3"X3" it's still a whopper!

Thanks Callum!

Jason,

I really look forward to seeing this one. It is so hard to believe how far you have come and how fast! You are really doing some nice work and this one will be no exception.

Joe

Thanks Joe!

Well, I've changed the composition a little. I may go with Steven's suggestion of a figure in front of the horse. This DOES (in my eyes) draw attention up to the horse and to the main scene.

I'm still not sure about the fella off to the right...Johan has me thinking of a hussar. I just may change the pose and make him a hussar!

We'll see how it goes... Thanks guy's!

Hey Jason!

Looking good so far. How about trying to 'bend' the figure in the front right corner to the inside instead of the outside. The way he is posed now, it seams to draw away from the rest of the scene, while if he was 'bend' towards the crowd that would lead you in more so to speak. Every other element of the vignette is pulling you into the center except that one, but hey, you are the dio expert and not me!

Keep it up man, going to be one sweet piece!

Jason, excellent idea for a diorama. The compostion looks really nice and I think the focus is very clear. I am looking forward to watching this one come to life.

Thanks Bob and Kreston!

Anders, good point buddy! I see what your saying. However, there is very little room to do anything in that section of the dio. If you notice the left foot of the soldier in relation to the hooves of the horse... the pose fits. Where as if I "flipped" him around he would be directly under the horeses neck. Believe me, I've tryed to come up with every sort of pose to fill that void and nothing worked on how I wanted it. This is the only pose that works for me for now.

When I first look at the dio, this is the direction I look. Anyone else see it different?
Does that figure look that out of place?
