My first attempt at uploading a photo.....Keeping my fingers crossed.

On the prior forum format I was asked about some info concerning a Huron Lacrosse player I have been working on. The base figure is from a limited lot cast by a long closed resin caster here in Mass, Soldat. I picked him up in the early 90's and not sure the orginal sculptor. I have made a number of modifications and resculpted different areas such as the shirt folds and arm positions. He is approx 90mm. This first photo is the base figure after cleanup and priming before any modifications. More to come if I can get this to work

Well, as you can see, failed upload. Sorry, but it is beyond me

Walt, When you typing your posting go to browse at the bottom of the page go to your picture folder and select the image. As long as it's the right size it should not be a problem.~Gary

Ok, Here is another try at the Image up load of the Huron Lacrosse player after cleanup & Prime. I think Gary may be right and the image size may have been my previous down fall. Hope this one makes it, but at the same time is big enough to see.

Walt Damon If this fails, I may ask if I send it to Gary via email, perhaps he can look at it and see if it is postable

Ok...finally got an image up after reducing size....here is another with a rough undercoat so I could get a feel for how i want it to look. Some sculpting on the shirt to get the folds to go over much of the voids that equipt would have filled but I elected he wouldn't be wearing during a match (IE: the Powder Horn) I will keep trying different size images until i can get one large enough to see but still within the upload boundries.

He looks good Walt. What figure is this one? Do you have the ability to "crop" photos? You could crop the photo and eliminate the white around the actual photo, like this

is.php

This way the actual photo is smaller (eliminated the white) and the Indian can be sized up larger. It takes awhile to get the hang of it.

The Figure is from Soldat from the early 90's. I believe only a few were cast in resin. approx 90mm. I may have indicated before i use Andrea #10 acrylic for the skin tones on the woodland indians as a base. A flesh undercoat with the #10 wash over it for the highlites and brown Madder Arliz oil wash for the shadows. I have posted below a "cropped" photo of anothe Huron using this skin mixture. I will use same on the Lacrosse player.

Much thanks to Guy for the cropping idea

Beautiful work Walt. I have this kit in the wings and had planned to do a kit review on it later this week. Quang does a remarkable job in sculpting the Native Americans.

Walt, Great idea. I believe that is the Stockbridge/ Mohican warrior sculpted by Bill Merklein (sp). It's a figure that I should have picked up at a show a few years back, the sculpting was very nice.~Gary

It would be a good question to ask Bill. If I remember right the first Soldat offering was the HUGE Confed infantryman, which was in fact sculpted by Bill, so it fits the casting of this woodland indian as well soon after. The plan is to have it at MFCA, and I will track Bill down and ask him.

It orginally came with a rifle and full set of equipt like a power horn ( which I used on a conversion of the MRoberts Am Rev Fifer into J. Harrington, killed in the first volley at Lexington) and Tomahawk.

I believe I saw in one of the trade mags under a show report from the late 90's, a photo of this figure in full dress, by Steven Brown. Perhaps if he reads this he may have some additional info.

Meantime...based on some feedback from the rest of my fellow figure cronies here in Western MAss, there seems to be some question on the "Bunching" of something in the center of the chest. My first impression was to consider it a medallion of some sort, and painted it as such (white metal), but others think it is the fancy collar extention down the front of the shirt. Any opinions from members??

Walt, It's the fron of a ruffled shirt. I did see a painted version once where it was painted silver! I got a chuckle out of it and was wondering what the painter was thinking. I guess it could be mistaken for a medallion of some sort.~Gary

RUFFLE, that was the word I couldn't think of (Bunching, now there is a senior moment word from out of no where). As such I have put a dabble of paint on the ruffle and hopefully is more appropraite.

Reference attached photo, along with my first attempt at head dress features from Magic Sculpt. Getting down to touch up and then the DREADED ground work, and he should be ready for "time lapse"...thats where i don't look at him for a couple weeks after I think I am done.....amazing how a new eye can find the need for necessary changes.

Walt, I can'y wait to see the finished figure. I like the "time lapse" idea. It's nice to come back to something after a few weeks and look at it with fresh eyes.~Gary

Here is a full figure shot, realizing still needs some touchup, like some changes to the beadwork on the bag, and of course a full ground work event. Lots of putty work on the shirt to get the folds more robust. The lacrosse stick is brass tube hammered into shape ( only thing I could find to make the transition from round (handle) to flat (cradle) with that dramatic curve at the transition point.

Enjoy Walt Damon

For the Netting on the Stick, I started out using elastic thread (buy it very cheap in a sewing store, peel out one of the 3 strands) as I have had success with this on bow stings. It streches to a fine filiment and works very well with super glue. Problem I found was that a pouch on a lacrosse stick has some flex....ie: not taut.
So the elastic thread wasn't going to work. Tried a few others, and finally ended up with a fine thread filliment "she who must be obeyed" had in her sewing box.
Frankly I am not real happy with the result. Need to think a little more how to weave the threads yet maintain more of a pouch look. This version still looks a little too taut to me.

Another photo to see the pouch lacing.
