This is a really cool idea and nicely executed!

Lovely painting and especially so on the German 2 seater. Willy Coppens was surely an ace pilot to land his own aircraft though on that terrain - and - without taking off the undercarriage !

Is this based on an actual photo?

No , but he shot 2 rumpler c IV, but he was specialist to shoot the german observer balloon
