Gary, it would have come to almost eighteen inches high if I did the doorway and facade to scale. Somewhat overpowering. But, we'll see.

I think I need a more modest setting that still invokes the metaphor. I was thinking of the Churchill family coat of arms if I can find an example.

Wasn't able to read your reply to my post about the hat size until today. I'm surprised about the measurements being the same. Just another example of my eyes lying to me and when in doubt, break out the dividers and mm ruler.

I started painting this figure. It is very preliminary but the basic tonality of the suit can be seen.

Very, very nice Bob. The paint brings out the folds and creases in the coat and trousers. I assume the fabric of each would be combed wool, medium weight so the creases would be deep and gentle - just as you've done them. I particularly like the ones emphasizing his um..."middle". Winnie had a bunch of middle.

I think the pics have a slight blue cast to them but otherwise it is pretty accurate.

Your 'dark painting' method is coming along very well!
The pinstripes look very well done, and the flesh color is a healthy British pink.

An update. The pinstriping is done. The SMG still needs front and rear sights. And the mock-up of the base shows a representation of the Churchill family crest. I think the colors contrast nicely with the blacks and greys of Winston.

Thanks gents. I won't post anymore pics at this point until it is completed which should be in a week or so. Then it's back to 1/32 and my next dio. I will show this piece at Tulsa if any of you are going.

Incidentally, the Churchill family motto is (in Latin) Fiel Pero Desdichado, or the somewhat cryptic translation to, "Faithful but Unfortunate."

Great job on this piece, and thanks for the sbs so we can watch it come to life.

May I suggest that you check your sources again on the family motto. Either the language is not latin or the quote is incorrect. I am a fair Latin scholar, and this word configuration does not seem correct. For example, the word for faithfulness is: fidel, fidelis. "Feil" is not a common form of that word.

Great piece all the same, and I hope to see it in person some time.
