This is done with Vallejo wood grain(transparent) built up in very thin layers over a yellow base. You can streak the base with thinned brown, to enhance the grain effect. The shade and highlight can be achieved by applying less on the area you want lighter. Add a touch of black/dark brown to the shadow areas.

I recently painted one with Iraqi sand as base then followed-up with Vallejo smoke. So far this is pretty much the only technique I've used for painting wood grains.

Hmmm,i think i will order Vallejo wood grain and smoke,and try on different muskets.
It make take few to achieve a good technique.
