My Mom passed away on Oct 8. Unfortunately I can’t afford to stay in the house and I have to move into an apartment at the beginning of the year. I wanted to get feedback from those of you who live in apartments and how you’ve setup your modeling work area with limited space. I’m moving into a one bedroom apartment

thank you in advance

My condolences.
As for the workplace, I model the figures within the same desk. I would like to replace the lamp, remove the speakers from the table, and also make and put next to the table a bedside table with drawers for storing constantly used tools and materials.

Hi Anne

Mine and all our deepest sympathy at the sad news

Like many I work off a desk , the key is organise yourself ...there are clip on lights , saving space , perhaps get a under table storage for paints etc , saving space

Take your time sorting it out , you will change things as you work , finds things that help

....work on a cutting mat ........advised .....ask my wife ......after a " incident" ...lol

Stay positive and look forward to seeing how you get on and your painting

My condolences and prayers for your mother, and for you and your family. Losing a parent is one of the most difficult things we face in this world. When my mother passed, a friend mentioned going through a year of firsts, too-the first birthday when she's not there, the first holiday, Thanksgiving, Christmas, and so on.

As far as setting up a work area goes, I recommend getting a tool box to use for storing your tools and supplies. I've shared these photos here before, but it bears repeating. I tried different solutions over the years, for organizing my supplies and making them easily portable to club meetings and meet-ups. This is what I've come to use:

That's a Craftsman toolbox, with a tray that lifts out. Most of what I need at any given moment is stored in that toolbox. I also have a smaller toolbox, made of pine, that I bought myself years ago at Blick's, when I got the idea that I was going to learn to paint with oils, and paint flats, "just like the Germans":

With toolboxes like these, you can keep your supplies organized and stash the boxes out of the way when not in use-in a closet, under the bed, etc.

I have an LED desk lamp that I carry in the larger toolbox. It's similar to this one:

It has the advantages that it can be taken apart (neck and base) and folded up for storage, and, it's a desk lamp, so you can leave it out on the desk or table. It has several settings of color and brightness. These run about $25 or so.

When need be, I can stow these things in a very short time, in a relatively small space.

Hope that helps!
Brad

I forgot to mention that I got that Craftsman toolbox a couple of years ago, during a Christmas sale at Lowe's. If you would like to get one, watch for sales, and you can find one at a decent price.

Prost!

Milan Dufek uses a converted clothes closet..I can’t seem to get the image from his patreon page to come over..and after all, it’s his ..but he set up a closet with foldout storage…unless you go for airbrush station and such…you can do most anything in a small space and all you need is a place to let things dry..

It very much depends on how you hobby really.

I have friends who have whole paint ranges from multiple brands, airbrush station, blah blah, etc.

I actually live in a 2 bed flat with my wife, 2 kids, and 2 cats. Have a fairly small selection of paints and mix quite a bit when painting. Plus, everything is in storage boxes so I clear aways into cupboards when I'm done.

We have an IKEA desk and the only permanent things attached to it is a monitor and stand (so my wife or myself can dual screen when working from home), and two IKEA lamps which I mainly use for hobby. My kids also se the space for homework.

The main thing really is getting used to not having everything to hand all the time and having a small set of your most used items which you almost always reach for.
I have mine split into a building and basing box and a painting box.

Not sure any of that helps but it is definitely possible to hobby in a small space. My last space was about the size of a large cutting mat for example.

Rough idea (it's changed a little since).

Dear Hobbychick, firstly many condolences on your loss. I hope you are okay.
As others have said, if space is limited organisation and discipline are key. You cannot beat a good toolbox, preferably one with different layers.
It's also well worth considering paying a visit to (what you Americans call) thrift/ charity stores, or a second hand furniture shop. In such places I've found little drawer units etc that I wouldn't have found anywhere else - all for a pretty cheap price.

DO let us know how you get on...

thank you Blind Pew. Doing ok, It will take me a little longer processing my Mom’s passing as I looked after my Mom and the house for 21 years. Unfortunately we’re having to sell many things in the house to afford the lawyer and take care of other items. I have to put aside what i was working on and pack up what I’ll be moving, clean out what I will sell etc. I’ll keep y’all updated

Hobby chick- it’s from greenstuffworld, called a light bridge, mor arch..they can readily be homemade..intended first for content makers..I have been using some high end lamps from BenQ, but my fabric artist wife uses them now for her fabric painting..and I like to try stuff..it’s nice..so far..

Hi Anne,
Firstly my most sincere condolances. Attached below is a thread that might give you some ideas, believe me the more space you have the more you fill it.
You could make things like a wall mounted bench that could fold away and use a folding chair. It all depends on what you need and the available space you have. Use to wall space to full effect, wall mounted cupboards, shelves ect. A thick shelf for example could have holes drill in the edge to accommodate paint brushes, sculpting tools, files thus leaving the top free and the underneath for hanging other things. Multi storage boxes & multi draw cabinets can be very useful. Always go the second hand route if you can and save some money. Even things like a magnetic knife holder can be useful.
cheers
Richie

Richie, thank you for your condolences and the tips/link you provided. I’ll definitely keep y’all updated. It’s looking like some time maybe Jan or Feb. Waiting to see how long it will take to get Mom’s will settled.
