I first came across the story of Brad Kasal on the net while searching for pictures of US marine camouflage in Fallujah. I am sure everyone has now seen the famous picture of Brad Kasel being evacuated from an insurgent house. Interested by this story I did a bit more research and found a documentary on youtube (link below).

Inspired by his story and heroic acts I decided to scratch build the iconic picture. BUT 2 days later Airborne Miniatures released their own version in 1/35 scale - thank god, cos it would have taken me ages to scratch build.

Anyway after a few modifications and additions I started painting. The original model had the injured marine holding his hand gun with the hand on the trigger, however in the picture Brad Kasal shows TREMENDOUS trigger discipline under very difficult circumstances, something I believe should be portrayed correctly – therefore I corrected it. I have not made much progress as I have had heavy work obligations….also the US digital camouflage is scaring the crap out of me…it’s gonna be tough.

Hope that you like. Apologies for the pics they are not that good.

Ant

p.s this is a sensitive subject matter so apologies if anyone is offended.

I would love to see this figure trio done in 1/16th

In 1/35 don't sweat the MARPAT too much, its not that distinct, especially when covered in grime, dust, blood, etc...
Just look at it in this pic. The guys in the front would be around 1/16 scale or larger, and its basically blobs of brown on tan, not distinct blocks of color and patterns. The guy in the back would be 1/35 or so. Making it too distinct and perfect doesn't look right.

Interesting....clever way of explaining and solving my problem...THANKS.

What were your color mixes for the MARPAT?

Hey Chazman, there is no real correct mix...nothing really turns out like the original MARPAT...but essentially it is a mix of the below colours (for me) until you feel you have the correct mix. I spent a lot of time testing and comparing.

Deck Tan
Khaki
Tan Yellow
Iraqi Sand
Cork Brown
Beige Brown

FYI painting the MARPAT once for me was enough...I do not think I will be trying it again...royal pain in the @#$%

I hope this helps.

Anthony, any updates? I really like this trio. And yes, I agree that 200mm would be an awesome set. No worries, we'll buy em and paint em for ya, lol.

Cheers, Ski.

Thanks Anthony.

Yeah, I hear you about once is enough. I've got one more MARPAT project on the table, and then it's back to something easy, like SS Oak Leaf. ;)
