Joseph Lesage's drawings are at once both charming and arresting.
Already recognised for his exceptional talent, he was nonetheless called up as a reservist.
There is something very special about the French interpretation of World War One, exemplified in M. Lesage's art.
Having survived almost to the armistice, the flu pandemic killed him in October 1918. He left a wife and two children behind. Another tragedy in that dreadful conflict.

I was unaware of Lesage, many thanks for the link, some really interesting drawings with great inspiration for vignettes and dioramas.

In a similar vein, I picked these up at the Fleury Museum, near Verdun a number of years ago.
Nice, illustrative art. It tells a story in a similar way to poetry; I sometimes wonder whether that is as close as most of us will get to knowing what it was like.
