Hello all, I’ve recently transitioned from oil paints with this being my first attempt at painting a bust with acrylics.

I never thought I could become comfortable with acrylics but they are quite easy to get used to and I’ve also started using a wet palette which is a lot of fun!

Hi Steve

Sorry thought I’d misread this “ your 1st “ ......a WOW! from me , very nicely painted ......

You should be really happy , like the work on the helmet and the overall uniform colour

Which acrylics are you using ?

Be interested in seeing your flesh colours please

Why not support the competitions see link below

Looking forward to seeing more

Have fun @ the bench

Cracking piece of work, very well balanced and crisp. I like the face, he looks tired, great job.

Cheers Simon

Thank you everyone and I’ll get a handle on the photograph size and posting in general.

Nap I’ve been using Mr Black publications Rommel painting guide along with watching Uncle Nightshift , Beiberhunter and a few others to get my flesh tone mixes. Since acrylics are new for me there’s still a lot of experimentation using Vallejo paints with AK’s acrylic retarder. I’ve also started to learn how to use glazes and that is/was difficult to get a handle on since my background came from wet blending my colors when using oils.

Back in the early days we used Burnt Umber and Burnt Siena for flesh tone shadows, boy how things have changed!

As a transitional, kind of 'training' piece, you must be well happy with this. Especially with those skin tones you've achieved. I say that as that's the thing I do find the hardest with acrylics. Everything else, not too bad, but skin.... You've definitely nailed it, no doubt about it.

Thank you so much! and yes quite happy with the end result, it’s so much fun learning new techniques and mediums.

So ya done crossed over to the dark side, did ya? Well, fine, be that way!:ROFLMAO::D;) Sorry, mate, I'm a die-hard oiler, HA!

This really looks good and you did make the transition rather nicely. Excellent flesh work, Steve! Ruck On!

I still long for the smell of oil paint in the morning , been using oils since the beginning way back in the late 90’s. I always wanted to give acrylics a try but the thought of blending was something that scared me, enter acrylic drying retarder and a wet palette then things got easier.
