Hi pF,

I just completed Young's recent bust and would like to seek comments & critiques. As always no critique is too harsh, so fire away :) I apologise for the large and somewhat dark photos taken :p

Thanks !

This SAS trooper looks great (y)!! I like the deeply tanned look of his face. I do agree with Carl though about the brass rod, just a tad long.

Joe

Thanks for the encouragement guys :)

What's good length for the length of the brass rod ? (I made it shorter than the previous bust i was working on :p)

I think if you take off about 1/4th (not 1/4"), of the exposed length it would look fine. If the rod is not yet cemented into the base slide it out and try holding the bust behind the base. Hold it at eye level and starting with the lowest portion of the bust flush with the top of the base, work it upwards to what looks good. Try and mark the rod where its flush with the top of the base then drill the hole in the base to where when you reinsert then its to that level. Its very much trial error until you get it where you want it. When I'm in doubt I get the opinion of a family member. Hope this helps. Keep in mind this is personal taste.

Joe

Looks very nice might be worth considering lightening around the eyes in the shape of the goggles to show dust/tan effect, length of the rod really depends on the shape/size of the bust IMO, this is a tad long to my eyes but it's a matter of personal taste,

Nice! I like it a lot, inspires me to get cracking on one myself
My only comment would be that I think the steering wheel would look better if it has a partial column to show that its attached to a jeep and not so much floating in mid air. Attached is a quick chop to show what it would look like.

Hi JasonB,

That's a great idea ! That gives the bust another dimension. Tks !

Excellent paint job on this, Rompy.
Jason, your idea on the steering column is great.
Thanks
I just think this is a prime example that manufacturers and sculptors could use to see why you need to include everything in the viewable area, and not just parts. Basically if you took a full size picture of this guy and placed a frame around him to show what we see in this bust, you would see the steering column. With it missing it looks forgotten, because we know we should see it there. Thats my prime issue with busts that give you almost full torso's down to the belt line, but no arms. In my example above I would actually extend the column out a little to extend the same length as the fingers on the hand. Or as they say, a picture speaks a lot of words. Imagine this photo without the column. I think when I do mine I will include the flowing head piece to make it a little different.

Nice one Jason ,

I like the tanned look , agree about the rod being a tad too long and also about the steering wheel ...I would also add some medal ribbons as well .

The wings look great really nice painting on these .

Thanks for sharing

I think adding the epaulet detail would be interesting as well. Sorry I don't know British uniform details, is that embroidered rank in a diamond shape or a pin on device? Close ups pics would be useful.

Hi Guys,

I agree with Jason on the rank bein added , seeing as how the sculpt is so close to the picture , surprised these and the ribbons were left off...but easy to add on .

Nice one Helm on the ranks ...the coloured surround to some are in relation to the wearers Regt/Corps for this one I would suggest the picture of the cloth version is the one .....faded with the sun!!!

Hi Rompy,
Very nice work, I think all the comments given to add enhancements to the figure is sound advice and would elevate this piece even more. I would also like to see a bit more wear on the steering wheel and column if added, the introduction of a few paint chips as it looks a bit too clean.
cheers
Richie
