Some more progress. The building has been started and a date palm added to give an LA feel. I added another sailor grabbing at a Zoot Suitor, Colors are just blocked in to get an overall sense of the color scheme.

Not content with the arrangement I made some modifications after discussions with Mike Good offline. I added a new sailor in work fatigues boxing the ears off one Zooter and another new Zooter in wire frame on the ground being attacked by a sailor with a baseball bat. I think the scene now is perfectly chaotic and complete and really portrays the Zooters as being suddenly and violently victimized.

It kills me to show my work in progress here since I am such a slob and most of you are such neat sculptors :(

YEAH, RIGHT. You have nothing to be embarrassed about, Bob.

This is easily the best vignette I've seen on PlanetFigure since...since your last one - Sarajevo.

This scene absolutely draws you in. I can almost hear the swearing and smacking of fists on chins and baseball bats on heads.

In my mind, I'm imagining one more figure - a red-faced fat policeman on the other side of the street, rocking back on his heels slightly, mouth wide open, laughing, pointing with his billy.

It's an absolute pleasure to see your work in progress. I look forward to every posting.

All the best,
Dan

Wait 'til you see the one I have planned on the KKK. It will be total political incorrectness but thought provoking.

The sailor in the back leaning against the date palm is almost finished being painted. So far I have three of the twelve figures painted. Nine figures to go and then the cab and then put the whole thing together. Easy as pie ;)

Once again I am stupefied by the awesome talent 'on the planet'--Bob, you sure tackled an interesting subject. I especially like the guy that is crashing into the trash can! Excellent action going on!
I showed these photos to a non-modeling friend and she was amazed (she saw the play 'Zoot Suit' years ago & loved it).
I'll keep checking back on your progress, but it looks like you're almost there!

Linda,

I think there are many little stories tucked away in history that while they can't compete with some of the larger "epic" historical events have a tremendous amount of compelling aspects that interest me a great deal.

I am infatuated with drama and it is a challenge to take subjects like this and portray them as I see them in my mind's eye and at the same time draw attention to an event that many people either have little or no knowledge of.

I always do a lot of research on a subject and for me personally delving into some of these obscure subjects gives me great deal of insight into the actions and motivations of people in general. The irony of this event in light of the larger event of WWII and why Americans ostensibly were fighting it in the first place is what attracted me first and foremost.

Thank you for the comments.

Hey Bob!

Man, this really is comming together! The scene and the chaos of the figures are very, very well coordinated. Almost like a fighting scene coreography (sp?) in some movie. A hard feat to pull off but your doing awesome so far!

Great to see your sculpting get better as well, the last sailor you posted is probably one of your best.

I hope to see it in Atlanta!

Anders, I think by just doing these large dios with so many figures I have to improve one way or the other :)

Yes, it is choreography. The whole time I was composing this scene I kept thinking of West Side Story and the choreographed fights.

Thanks for the comments.

Bob
