Having really enjoyed working on their Sgt, 15th Kings Hussars, my next project is also from Hawk Miniatures. This offering, sculpted by Alan Ball in 90mm, depicts a Russian artillery man defending himself against a trooper of the British 11th (Prince Albert’s Own) Hussars during the famed Charge of the Light Brigade. I first saw this set at last years Euro on the Hawk stand but unfortunately had already spent my allotted funds so had to wait a while before ordering it. The kit is cast in resin and is very crisp and detailed. The quality of the casting is up there with the best in the market in my experience and there was only a minimal amount of cleaning and filling needed. It’s very early days yet and so far other than prep and undercoating I’ve just laid on a base flesh coat in enamels ready for the oils.

Do you know if the Hussar figure is still available?
You can still get these figures from John at Hawk Miniatures- they weren’t showing on his web page which initially threw me when I was trying to locate it but it is available, he’s just not got round to putting it on so far due to other commitments. Hope this helps,

Neal.

Managed to start putting some oils onto these. Started on the horse and the main body colour which is a mix of Burnt Sienna and Brown Madder. I used pure oil paint undiluted to try and give the coat a sheen. The shades and highlights have been started and I’ve started to try and replicate some veins on the tops of the legs and stomach. I’ve laid the base of the eye in and the facial markings and “socks” on a couple of the legs. As regards the Hussar and artillery man, I’ve done the flesh in oils and started blocking in some basecoated colours for the head dress and clothing. Oils are still wet in the pictures.

Thanks Terry, really appreciated. Saw your threads re your interest in the Crimean War and looking for manufacturers making figures from this period. Hope you find something suitable.

LOL.... Don’t worry Nap, I’ve got some more busts recently arrived, from Gordon’s offer, to tackle after this so normal service can be resumed! The instruction sheets with the kits feature several shots of the box art for reference. The sculptures by Alan Ball are super, very crisp and clean with great detail.

Neal.
