And from the other side.

Johan, it's slightly larger than 120mm, around about 1/12th at a guess.

I also feel you've done an excellent "young" face there, very appropriate for an Ensign.
I'll second Johan's comment on the face. You did a fine job of creating 'youth'. (y)

Still looking good! (y)

Judging by the epaulette he's in a battalion company? Now that's also something I could never figure out, exactly which company in British foot regiments did have the colour party?

... Oh btw: not important really, but it seems that, at Waterloo, the men of the 28th North Gloucestershire were mostly people from Devonshire, etc, and Ireland .... hardly any from Gloucestershire  Now isn't that strange, why did they call 'em Gloucestershire then?

Hi Johan.

The colour party is a seperate entity, not attached to any company. It's associated with the battalion company because traditionally it stands in the middle, so the colour party is behind that. The flank company is on the left (the clever fast soldiers), used for skirmishing actions, and the grenadier company on the right (the "less clever", but brutal soldiers), used for insane actions.

Hardly any soldiers in the regiment were from Gloucestershire (hence the lack of intelligence and good looks ) at Waterloo. The 28th was originally raised in Portsmouth (hence Devon) and wasn't associated with Gloucestershire until just before the Peninsular War (when the recruiting party's were sent out). Why it was associated with North Glos I don't know, and why the 61st was associated with South Glos I don't know. Conversely the regiment associated with Gloucestershire at this time was in fact the 24th foot.

I wouldn't read too much into regimental associations, they were chosen with a pin, and don't forget that of all the British Army that fought at Waterloo, only about 28% were from The British Isles anyway.

Right that's enough history lessons for now

I copied your post and printed it out - VERY interesting, thanks! (y)

I really like that sort of historical background stuff! (y) It makes a figure even more interesting I think!

Well, I'm sure that ensign is going to be a great figure - what you've showed us so far is terrific!

Here a couple of progres shots, it is now quite big, when you include the standard, but it's nearly finished now.

This is a whole view.

And a closer view of the ensign. The standard is in the early stages btw and won't look quite so shabby when it's finished.

as always comments welcome.

Looking great! That's going to be an impressive figure! (y) (y) (y)

Look forward to seeing more, and I already wonder if he will carry a sword or a pistol in his other hand.

Good work! (y) (y) (y)

Richard, Very nice. I never would have thought to do an bust of an ensign with a color. Very creative and original.~Gary

Hey Richard!

You bust is excellent! I really like the concept of a bust with a standard, very neat. Are you doing the flag so it can be removed for easier painting? Looking forward to future updates (y)

Hey Guys

Thanks for your comments, Anders yes, it comes in three parts and the standard is seperate.

I think I'll be able to post some pics of the finished article later on, just as soon as I get the hand right (so that will be in a about a week then <_< )
