On to Bigger Things

Hey Guys!

After working on all these small guys I decided to do a drastic change and I started working on a 200mm face. Not sure the use of this head yet, but Im thinking maybe a bust or half figure, WWII most likely, and if so probably German, perhaps American, we'll see

I mainly started on this one to work on techniques and try to understand face sculpting a bit better, figured if I learn how it is supposed to look in large scale maybe I can understand better in smaller scales.

Another new thing with this one is that I am doing it in Milliput, the white kind. I had some laying around and I was doing a base for one of the sitting guys when I rolled the putty in a ball I thought It was about right size for a 200mm head, so the idea was born. To my big surprise I acctually kind of like this stuff. My previous experiences with it has not been so good but this time around its a real pleasure to work with. Only thing I have aganst it at the moment is that it is hard to get a smooth finish on it, but after I used scotch brite, superfine steel wool and then a super super fine white scotch brite the finish was shining!

John Long and I was talking about this, the chin seams to be a little too low on the face, so I will work it up a little. I also feel that he is way to "puffy" i.e very 'full' faced, need to figure out how to make him skinnier!

Here is some updated pictures, I thinned the chin a bit, but I think I need to add a little more on the topside of it, what you guys think?

The ears need some more clean up too I see

For you guys who have seen the movie Stalingrad, this guy kind of looks like the character that plays GeGe, weird how that worked out. Anyway, what you think?

Last pictures show great development and improvement.

My only comment would be to add something under his lower lip, it seems to go back too far (indent). But I guess thats what u mean by topside?

Now I don't profess to be an expert sculptor or a master at human anatomy, but ...
1. yeah, the face looks too "puffy" with the helmet on. Here's a thought: imagine a vertical line - and I "do" mean vertical - going straight down from the uper edge of the head (as seen from under the helmet) straight down along the mandible. Anything beyond this line could be viewed as "excess," which would explain the "puffy" look along the vertical jawline from under the ear - don't want that jaw portruding "too" much, otherwise proving Darwin wrong, eh?
2. the profile picture appears to show a somewhat abnormal overbite. How about filling in the area between the lower lip and the chin a bit more? Of course, make the curve noticeable,b ut not "too" pronounced. Call me crazy, but take a look at some criminal profile mugshots to get a good idea as to what this area looks like. Of course, ignore any such profiles of those prosecuted for "alien smuggling," "tequila trafficking," and "fence-jumping"

Pete got a point.

If you visualize the upper and lower teeth in the profile view, you'd see that our man cannot 'bite'.

Other points to check out: the nape (where the neck starts), where the lower jaw ends (just under the ear lobe, NOT behind) and where the ear starts (where the cheek bone ends).

Great work Anderes. Keep it up. I would agree with the anatomical points that others have made; press on though and enjoy the learning process! (I know I am!) You're making great strides.

Hey Guys!

After reading all your postes and reading your advice, Ive now worked some more on the head. I pulled the lips down a little, filled in under the lower lip, Added more to the chin, shaped the end of the jaw more, and carved the back of the head.

Let me know what you think of it now!

And a couple of 3 quarter views. I really thought this thing was smooth, as it is shining in person, but looking at the pics its really rough
