Carl I believe Steve Kirtley has the Rorkes Drift figure painted by Brian. He has it through Thunderbirds!
Nothing to do with Steve but I do believe Thunderbirds asked Brian if they could use his painting for box art. Promised him two of the busts for his trouble but never ever got round to sending him the busts. Cant remember where I heard this snippet but at least you will know you got the same for your bust as Brian got for the box art, nothing!!!!!

Hi Don,
Maybe something lost in the translation from the Monkey Hanger, in the reply to Carl I meant he could purchase one from Steve at SK Miniatures.

Hello Richie,
I painted this piece(Carl Reid) this past winter.I think I did alright on it;but it still sits on my workbench covered up because as a novice(two yrs.).I am not comfident enough to weather it,been working on another piece to get my confidence up.Thinking about using oils or pastels.
If it helps you;I posted about six months ago on "General Figure Talk" ....."Rorke's Drift Bust Again"...pg,..14.
I received a boatload of info RE: This subject which I greatly appreciated and led me to getting a couple of dvds.Very interesting subject.
By the way; I must have gotten one of the first ones because the box art was done by Anders Heintz...or maybe it was the later box art?
Anyway good luck with your projects ; I'm sure you will do a great job............Best Regards......Wayne

Hi Wayne,
Thanks for looking mate, I remember your post I contributed some of the pictures, but I do not recollect seeing any pictures of your painted bust!

Hi All,
I have managed to get half an hour in, bloody work and hot weather, I have been tackling my nemesis otherwise known as the eyes. This is my initial attempt on the eyeballs, I would appreciate critique/tips as I do not want to go any further until I nail these. There has been no work done on the whites of the eyes and some tidying up to be done.
Help always appreciated.
cheers
Richie

Hey Richie,
Eyes are lookin pretty damn good.Sorry about not posting pics;just not at that point yet...but gettin there.
Did you have any problem on the Reid bust meshing the hand with the forehead?
Please continue posting your progress;...watching with much interest.
As Gregory Peck said in "The Guns of Naverone"..........You're in it now....Up to your neck.
Best regards and keep the good work................Wayne

The eyes look great Richie...not crossed at all, as my wife always accuses me of doing.

This will be a cool bust when done.

Colin

Hi Richie, eyes look very well balanced mate. If you want to be 'picky', the right hand one, (left as you look at the pics) needs a small tidy up to the lower curve of the pupil. But, otherwise, all good.

Cheers

Hi Wayne,
The way I over came this was to sculpt a neckerchief on the inner of the tunic collar and add a touch of putty to increase and alter the neck length and position, I also cut a groove in to the bottom of the left hand mutton chop so it fit over the left tunic collar more. Nothing major but it brought everything into line perfect so I did not need to alter the left arm.

Hi Colin,
Thanks, that's why I want to get the eyes correct first as there is no place to hide on these larger busts and I usually always get the left eye slightly out of position.

Hi Ron,
Thanks for pointing that out mate and yes I would like you to be picky so I can improve. I will endeavour to tidy up the eyes and refine the iris colour later.

Hi Richie,
The eyes look great on this one Mate, you must be really pleased with your efforts?
I particularly like your choise of brown shades and the touch of red/pink on the inner lids. Once you have started work on the outer lids I am sure the whole piece will come alive.
Great progress.
All the very best,
Keith

Feel a bit of fraud here with my track record on eyes :) but maybe just slightly cut down the width of the eye whites? They look just a little "starey" to me but it might well be the pics again my track record isn't good there either
Steve

Richie,
Went back into the archives and yes you indeed contributed seriously to my questions.Thank you very much.
I too had to do some reworking to get the head and hand just right.
Look forward to your progress.............Wayne

Richie,
Lookin good.......That tea coloring on the helmet was tough for me.Still haven't got it right. One of the reasons my Reid bust is still covered up and in the thinking process,..but think and paint on..............Regards......Wayne

Looks good, Richie.
I really like how you trated the helmet. What would the helmet have been made of? Was it a frame covered in a canvas-like material or hard panels fitted together? I have no idea and I haven't learned a single thing today... help me out here

Good progress Richie.
I really like the method and choice of colour on the helmet, looks splendid.
The flesh tones and eyes are coming on nicely too.
All the very best

Hi Wayne,
Whether I use acrylics or oils as on this one I also use a similar technique and colours as far as I can between the two mediums. I start off putting a coarse coat of white acrylics over the primer, on this one with oils I then scrub with a light colour over such as a burnt sienna and wipe off so the paint layers are thin, I don't cover too smooth or even so you get variations in the the shades of staining. I then use a darker colour over the top such as a burnt umber again scrubbed on coarsely and wiped off again in thin layers so it stains in various shades and depths of colour. You can always go back and add or scrub off with oils depending on the particular effect you want at the time.
Hope this helps.
cheers

Hi Colin,
Very basically the construction was made of cork panels covered in a light weight cloth.

Hi Keith,
Mate thanks, things are slow at the minute as I work in the conservatory and the outside temp has been consistantly 25-28 degrees, so you can double that when it's been locked up and I've been out at work all day.:wacky::facepalm::depressed:
cheers

Hi Richie, good progress mate. Helmet is looking really good, and eyes are a lot better. This scrub on , wipe off, with oils sounds familiar :hilarious:
But don't the oils dry fast in this weather!
