Great moves forward Richie.
I am amazed at the good white on the red coverage you have achieved. I always struggle in this area with oils.
All the best,
Keith

Hello Richie,
Looking good,,I did mine with mostly acrylics, but I think the weathering might be better done using oils. Also I did considerable fooling around to get the hand to connect with the forehead, where yours looks like the hand is on its way up.....Not sure what the sculptors interpretation was meant to be.....Just did what I thought was right.
Anyway,following your progress.........Regards.......Wayne

Hi Wayne,
Thanks for looking in again mate, I have actually done the same as you, the back of the hand will meet the forehead, I have just not pushed everything properly in place when I took these quick shots. I wanted to get the arm up so it shows off more of this wonderful sculpted face. I intend to try and get some beads of sweat running down the face when the painting is finished!
You can achieve really good weathering effects with acrylics - dust etc depending on what you want to do. It would be nice if you would post your version, it's easier for planeteers to help looking actual pictures.
cheers

Hi Keith,
Thanks, to be honest it's a touch rough, I wish I had done the straps in acrylics! I keep forgetting I am using oils and end up smudging a few bits. Anyway since these parts are going to be stained and weathered it should be OK!
cheers

Hi All,
An update so far, I have put a lot more work into the Rorke's Drift bust, but I've been working on the 24th officer too. Apologies for the awful photo's.
cheers

Whoa..Richie ..
Been waiting for this; ........the frosting on the cake is coming into focus for my own piece of the same.
Looking very good ......your work is giving me the confidence to go the extra mile..........
Best regards..........Wayne

Hi Keith,
Thanks for the very kind comments, I think I will need to look at this in the light of day again and decide if I need to be a little bit bolder in places. They seem to be lacking in the photo's a bit, but this maybe my usual shoddy camera snapping. I could not take a decent picture if old nick himself was after me!
cheers
Richie

Hi Wayne,
I'm happy that I can help inspire you with confidence to push on with your piece. You do what is right for you and how you want to portray him, look forward to seeing your version one day.
cheers

Hi All,
I have just taken some more photo's in better light, I have also added a splatter to the right strap and put a couple of dots on the forehead with a clear varnish to represent sweat beads, I hope this as enhanced this a little more. I still need to glue the head in it's final position, which will bring it closer to the hand and I will go round later and tidy one or two parts up, but looking at this in fresh daylight I'm pleased the way this is turning out.
Undecided whether to buy some Liquitex inks and put a wash on the hair to try and get more depth???? Thoughts please.
cheers
Richie

Hi Nap,
From what I can remember as I don't write things down:confused:
I airbrushed the base coat with acrylics, a mixture of Vallejo Vermillion 70909 and Reaper Clotted Red 09134. I then added various highlights and shadows from the two, for the darker shadow I added Reaper Walnut Brown 09136 to the mix. For the highlights I used various shades of Vallejo Light Orange 70911.
I then over painted various parts but not all with oils, various Cadmium Red shades and various washes of orange mixed from oils. When dry I then dry brushed the creases etc with a mix of Vallejo acrylics Buff 70976 and Flat Brown 70984 to give the dusty look. Possibly 50/50 but just mixed by eye basically to get the colour.
The blood effects were done with Reaper Clotted Red 09134, for this I used my dry brush and flicked the bristles with a cocktail stick, I had a few practice goes first on a piece of kitchen roll to get the right loading on the brush and pressure on the bristles, if this makes sense? For the black dirt I used payne's grey oils.

I think that's how I done it! You're making my brain work this is harder than painting;)
cheers

Hi Gerard, Colin and Brian,
Thank you so much for your kind words and praise I feel very honoured to mix in such company(y) I'm so glad you like my effort as I admire your work immensely.

Brian - I am still on with the other bust, I have done some work on the face but apart from that nothing, as my efforts have gone into the Rorkes Drift bust. I plan to carry on with this on next. He will not be post battle or as hard weathered as the other but will be a little dusty maybe.
Thank you again for the support this will spur me on no end.
cheers

Hi Richie, great stuff mate. Very impressed with the progress. With regard to the inks.....IMHO...an oil wash is/would be far superior. Much easier to blend the colour with the hair.

Hi Roger,
Thank you mate, I will do you a deal!.....you turn up on the 13th and I will bring this along. Now that must be worth a battering from the missus:hungover::cry::eek::dead: on your first day home after a month away.:D
cheers
