Hi Steve,
I do hope so......I really wan to have a crack at that colour sergeants badge and I think that it would look pretty good on the drab greatcoat.
How does artistic licence go down on pF Mate?
Keith

Hi Keith,
Well I use artistic license and tend to get away with it, it's your piece...... you have a crack at the Col. Sgt. badge mate(y). After all you are making this for you and we are just lucky enough to be along for the ride and to share your work.
cheers
Richie

Steve and Richie
Thank you fellas, I like the way that you boys think, right on my wave length. Ta.
On the chinstrap front, I have now positioned it on the front of the cap with the adjusting buckles and buttons. It has made him look a bit smartes.
I will post some pics tomorrow.
Thanks Lads.

I love the character that you have captured in this guy. I would not worry too much about the reality when atmosphere and feel is working as well as in your figure. Like others I do worry a little about the cape over the great coat I think it looks a little short.
John

Hi Keith,

You sent me back to my references! I was looking in the Osprey book "Wellington's Foot Guards." This references the 1806 order stating Foot Guards should have regimental facing colours on the collar and cuffs of the greatcoat. It also says chevrons should be worn on the right sleeve. There is an illustration of a 1st Foot Guards sergeant during the retreat to Corunna which shows dark blue collar and cuffs and gold chevrons on the right arm. So, get cracking on the C. Sgt's badge!

Pete

Hi Keith,

I'm no expert on the uniform details so I'll leave any comments on the chevrons and badges to thers.

I did want to say how much I like your sculpting efforts, and to encourage you to continue refining and improving your work as you go.

I find that with sculpting and painting, it's always that last 5% that makes the difference. Knowing when to stop is the hard part.

I find its always a good idea to stop just before your talent does ;)

Gentlemen,
Many thanks for you kind words and encouragement to press on in the direction that I prefer to go.

Hi John
Cheers mate I tried to get the face to match the gloom of loosing a good number of his men, more luck than judgement it looks to have worked OK.
With the cape, believe it or not I was concerned that it was too large from the photo I used as a guide. The coats for officers has a huge cape sometimes with a hood. For the poor old other ranks the cape in the photo only looks to cover the shoulders. See what you think Mate.
Cheers.

Hi Pete,
Sorry to keep sending you back into your books Mate. Great information and good news to boot. I think that the blue collar will add a nice touch to the greatcoat and I will do my best to make the Col Sgt badge look very grand too.
Cheers.

Hi Tony,
Thank you for such positive feed back and encouragement. Coming from a sculptor will your ability is a great boost.
Such words of wisdom Mate. I have never done the time and progress breakdown but seeing it in writting I can totally identify with what you are saying.
I do find myself looking for more and more detail that will be invisible to most viewers, when to stop.
A great help Mate many thanks.

Best wishes to you all and please continue to watch this space and comment on what you see.

You're right about the length of the cape maybe its just that in the photo the cape appears to close right over at the front. Perhaps, as yours is thrown back a little more bulk at the front edges would suggest that it does come right round the front.
John

Many thanks Roger,
There is still a little more putty to go on, a few more stitch holes to go around the crown, and a lot of cleaning up.
Thank you for looking in Mate.
All the very best,
Keith

Keith you have made a work of art of his rank insignia. I don't know about you but I always enjoy sculpting and painting medals and insignia. Your bust is going to be terrific and I can't wait to see the paint go on. I have really enjoyed reading along on this string and admire your research skills.

Colin

Hi Colin,
Many thanks for following this effort and taking time to comment, it is much appreciated.
Yes indeed, like you I really like to see how far I can go with medals and rank badges.
As for research, I thought I had a reasonable knowledge of the Foot Guards but I did get some invaluable advice from; Guards Guru Pete Hayes and the ubiquitous Kevin (Nap) Peart. Without the help and guidance of these fellows I would have been hit by a number of alligators.
I am almost at the painting phase so the sculpting tools will go into the drawer for a while.

Thanks again Colin, speak soon,
Keith

Hi Guys,
Following on from the discussion about the Col. Sgt. Badge, I have made a start on the Badge. It will be on the right arm only and bears the Victoria Crown and Cypher.
See what you think.
Cheers,
Keith

Hi Keith,
Well done that man, your making this a great unique piece of work mate, the detail is really going to shine through when you get some eventually get some colour on him. Just got to say again how much I love that face.(y)
cheers
Richie

Thanks for your continued support and guidance Richie, I really appreciate your words of wisdom.
I am pleased that you like the rank badge, thanks for driving me to commit to it.
Changes to the figure today; some addition to the cape to bring it closer together at the front on the good advice of John Ballard. I have also contemplated a rethink on the moustache to make it look to be over the beard rather than a part of it. but I think leave well alone and as Tony says stop working on detail before your talent stops.
So, finish the cape addition and remake two buttons and button holes, add a plinth to support the figure before it's fixed to the base..........then prime time. At last.

Thanks for keeping an eye on this one mate, speak soon

Thanks Keith. I've never been called a guru of anything before :). The arm badge looks like a work of art - really, really nice. I'm happy to see that you got the correct pattern of sword under the colour badge (naval cutlesses for the Grenadiers rather than the scimitars of the other regiments). I've scanned the Corunna illustration I mentioned and this is attached. Hope it helps.

Hi Pete,
I promoted you to Guru to give you something to live up to;).
I am pleased thay you like the arm badge and that I actually got it right with the cutlasses. You would not believe that the most difficult element was to match the three stripes on to the backing. So don't look too closely.
The Corunna illustrtion shows all of my questions it one picture; gold chevrons and collar and cuffs in facing colour. I am most grateful Pete. If our paths ever cross, and I hope that they will, I owe you a pint or two.
Many thanks for your help Mate and please keep an eye on my next steps to make sure that I keep on track.
All the best Pete.
Kindest regards,
Keith

Keith ,
Catching up on this one ..really impressive piece of work on the badge , right swords as well (yes I did check!!!) ...like the fact that you have included the stiching round the edging of the badge .
