A while back I joined in on a kickstarter for a gladiator style game called Arena Rex. They just recently finished production and started to ship the figures. When they arrived I had to jump right in and start painting one. This figure is Otho Mentulus, one of my favorite sculpts from the range. Tons of detail and pretty decent historical accuracy. He's about 35mm (they're intended to be gaming figures) so a bit smaller than what I usually work on. The small scale is definitely a challenge but the sculpt is great and that's a big help.

I'm using primarily Reaper acrylic paints although all of the metal work is Scale 75. I really like their metallic paints! I'm not quite finished with this guy. Still have a few details to do, the base, and probably some weathering.

It's been a while since I've worked on this little guy, but this past weekend I finally wrapped him up. The bulk of the work was done last year, but I still had to do his helmet crest and base. I also tweaked some of the highlights on his clothing. After that is was some blood splatter with Tamiya Clear Red and some minor weathering with pigments to add a bit of dust. All in all he was a fun figure to work on. I still prefer the larger 54 and 75mm projects, but every once in a while a 35mm is a good way to push myself out of my comfort zone.

By the way, if anyone is interested this figure and the other ones from the kickstarter should be available on the Arena Rex webstore in the next few weeks. They're shipping the final wave from the kickstarter and plan to make all the figures available once that is complete.
