WIP Critique Cavalry Diorama- Part II

Colin , I believe the Rocco painting is supposed to show the Dutch-Belgian Hussars, who did indeed wear sky-blue uniforms. At the risk of being thought a boring pedant , the KGL were supplied in the UK , and would have worn exactly the same cloths as their British counterparts , which in the...

WIP Critique Cavalry Diorama- Part II

I think that's fantastic : the movement works very well , and there's absolutely nothing wrong with your photography. Might I however suggest ( as has been noticed elsewhere on this board ) that his jacket should be a much darker blue ? It appears mid-blue, when in reality such uniforms were...

    WIP 9th Lancers 1880 Afghanistan .

Almost finished this large 1/6th project now , after having him in my workshop for about a year . As always with these big figures, it goes along in fits and starts . Theres' a fair amount of research necessary , especially with items like the saddle ; but I finally found someone who owned an...

Completed How do you smooth polymer clay like Sculpey or Fimo?

Having worked with Fimo and Sculpey and their predecessor Vinagel since 1972, Sculpey diluent is the nicest smoothing fluid. White Spirit works fine , but like Turpentine, when you heat the clay to cure it you will stink the house out. So use the Scupey diluent : clean , odourless , perfect.

    WIP WWW1 British steel helmet

Just one point : the WW1 Brodie had a circular brim, and an oval crown, unlike the Mk.II WW2 version , which had an oval brim and an oval crown. And the very first 1916 models had a sharp edge ,were painted apple green , with no folded bead around the edge. That was fairly quickly added by 1917...

    1/6th figure : Ensign, 11th Foot 1832 .

Based on the paintings in the Royal Collection by Dubois-Drahonet, this young chap is my latest 1/6th figure. All scratchbuilt , with a lot of 22 carat gold leaf applied to everything !

WIP Critique 120mm Brit Tanker from Stormtroopers

Super figure ! Go for the plain Pixie : the camo version never got used in WW2, as far as anyone can find out. There is a very distant possibility that it got used in Korea, but the pic is capable of several interpretations.... And if you do go for the camo after all that , remember it was in...

Looks pretty good so far : look forward to seeing this finished.

    AC Models Chindit Bren gunner

The usual uniform by the time of the Chindit raids was Indian cotton drill BD dyed jungle green , and the webbing mostly dyed to match. There might also have been some use of Khaki Drill in the first raid, because that was the uniform the troops started the Burma War wearing . I did a 1/6th...

    1/6th Figures

Thanks for the interest . The techniques are mostly explained on the site , but I could summarise them by saying that wherever possible I make things from the original material, or a scale substitute. The only sculpting is of the head and hands , and items like badges and metal fittings before...

    Royalist musketeer in 1/6th scale

I've been lurking around here for a few weeks , and although this figure is very unusual here because of its size, I thought it might be of interest. This is a completely scratchbuilt figure in 1/6th scale ( that's just under twelve inches tall ) of a typical Royalist Footsoldier from the...

Private - 1st Battalion Gordon Highlanders, Le Cateau 1914

Dan , thanks for those nice pics. The second is definitely Grenadiers, but the first is I think not , despite the caption. The cap-badge looks more like the Coldstream. Given their apparent height, they look like Guardsmen . The Regulation certainly existed : KR amended to 1 Aug 1914. para.1696...

New Tommy's War releases available at Euro this weekend

It's a difficult one , and I agree that there are plenty of pics showing men without moustaches : but it's sometimes impossible to know which Battalion appears in the pic , and exactly when the pic was taken. I get the feeling that genuine pics of the BEF Regulars ( that's the 1st and 2nd...

New Tommy's War releases available at Euro this weekend

These are really nice and original figures, but if they are supposed to be Regular Army soldiers of 1914, they should have moustaches. It was King's Regulations , and there were very few exceptions to the rule. Later in the war the rules were relaxed, but not with the BEF in 1914.

Private - 1st Battalion Gordon Highlanders, Le Cateau 1914

This is a really nice figure. I hate to be a pedant, but if this is supposed to represent a 1st Battalion soldier in 1914, he would have a moustache : they were regulation for the Regular soldiers in the BEF of 1914.

    castle miniatures 16th century nobleman

Avoid blue, which was regarded as a servant's colour in the 16th and 17th centuries. Green was unusual ( though certainly possible , but had to be dyed twice, making it expensive ). So that leaves all the reds/oranges/crimsons , yellows and browns etc. And black was the most respectable colour...

    Completed Critique Tommys War 54mm TW54001 Private-Mons 1914

It's a nice figure, but have you considered that he's carrying his rifle on the wrong shoulder, and too high ? Of course, on the march when " Marching Easy "he can carry it any way he wants, but conventionally the Slope Arms is on the left shoulder, with the bolt uppermost , and carried much...

My name is Tony Barton , I live in York in the UK, and I make small-scale figures for wargamers . I've been sculpting for forty years now , and I work exclusively nowadays in Polymer Clays, mostly Fimo. In the last ten years I've been concentrating on 1/6th scale figures, which I realise are...
