    Everyone's Gray Army

Guy, As a newbie to the hobby, I'm surprised to find that I have 3 or 4 figure kits that I suspect I won't get around to painting any time soon (alas, interests are a dynamic thing ). I was tickled to discover that the term "gray army" is used to refer to such kits. The concept you describe...

    Sculpting Contest

No need to apologize. Your English is certainly better than my French, Spanish, Italian, etc ;) . The international makeup of this forum adds to its interest for me. I only wish I was conversant enough in another language to be able to enjoy some of the other fine forums in cyberspace :( . Mike

    Toilet Reading

John, Along with a couple Osprey titles, I have Turnbull's The Book of the Samurai and The Samurai Sourcebook. These two books make a nice complement to each other in that The Book of the Samurai is lavishly illustrated with Japanese artwork, photos, and maps, and The Samurai Sourcebook takes a...

    Newbie - First Post

Keith, I've been using a borrowed Coolpix 775, and am looking at getting a Coolpix 2100, which I believe is the updated 775 based on the specs. I have to agree, it's an easy camera to use, and takes great pics for posting to the web. The combination of macro and the ability to zoom make it...

Beautiful job, Jason. I love the way the vignette is mounted-- you just know there's a battle raging all around these two! Mike Szwarc :thumb:

    Andrea's Scottish Piper (1690)

Thanks for the comments, guys. Joe, I don't see myself getting to Scotland anytime soon (although I will happily entertain any offers from those who are too busy to go themselves !!!), but I would definitely be interested in any info you have on tartans and how to lay them out on a figure...

    Andrea's Scottish Piper (1690)

Keith, The fit of the mouthpiece is good. The bag end fits into a small depression in the bag, and the mouth end sort of tucks up under the moustache. The length of the mouthpiece gives you a little leeway for a good fit ;). Mike Szwarc

    Andrea's Scottish Piper (1690)

I'm not especially interested in Highlanders or the Scottish clans, but I do enjoy the sound of the bagpipe, so when Andrea recently released this Scottish Piper (1690), I decided to get one. Living, as I do, in the Middle of Nowhere, I must purchase figures sight-unseen, relying only on...

    Figure Stumper?

John, That's a beautiful figure, alright. I recently saw one on eBay. Didn't bid on it 'cause I knew I couldn't afford it. It opened at $39.99, and sold for over $120. Good luck with yours. Mike Szwarc

    Pressure Casting In Resin

Quang, I'm too new at this to know why casting under pressure might be more appropriate than casting under a vacuum, and frankly, I'm beginning to believe that both methods could be used interchangeably. It seems to me that results matter more than technique. As far as how the pressure...

    Vacuum Casting Equipment

Staffan, Sorry, I just noticed that you're in Sweden . Still, some of the above suppliers may have distributors there. Also, I noticed that American Science and Surplus is listing a vacuum pump/compressor for sale (stock #25255, $79.50, listed as "30 PSI Air Pump). Their stock changes all the...

    Pressure Casting In Resin

Quang, The only explanation I've been able to find comes from an Alternative Studios article on vacuum chambers: "Many people think that you can vacuumize Resin, but this is not true.  Resin cures in a minute or two (depending on the temp of the material) and can be removed from the mold in...

    Pressure Casting In Resin

Quang, I'll try to borrow a digital camera and put up some pictures. What I did is really pretty simple, but a bit difficult to describe. I guess that's why a picture is worth a thousand words ;) . What struck me about the process I used is that decent results were obtained with a pressure of...

    Pressure Casting In Resin

I've been experimenting with resin casting, and as I mentioned in an earlier forum topic, my results were less than spectacular. Several of you offered suggestions, and Leigh and Quang posted links to websites with some SBS photos of the pressure casting process. I studied these sites, trying to...

    Figure Stumper?

Richard, In the world of flying model aircraft, there is a term for the results when a model reaches the ground in an unintended fashion. The model is considered to have been "rekitted". Looks to me as though you have simply rekitted a few items. Time to get to work! Mike Szwarc

    Great "period" Movie

Gary, Is this the new seafaring Russel Crowe movie? If so, the trailers looked interesting, and I'll definitely see it if it comes to the theater in the tiny town I live near. It seems as though there are several period movies being released now and in the near future. I'm interested in The...
