I can be a number of factors.
oils from finger prints
moisture from the airbrush
oil from the compressor
weeping resin
A precaution would be to wipe down the piece before hand with denatured alchohol. DA is very different from rubbing alcohol (found in most medicine cabinets)

You can elasticize evergreen strip by holding one end and then pulling the other end between your thumbnail and forefinger (kind of like how curly present ribbons are made).
That will make it much more pliable.
