    British Army Cape Issue.??

Up until 1901, orders of dress for field days etc. are still instructing that O.R. s should carry cape and greatcoat. The first pattern of khaki greatcoat (1902) had a cape built in. So I would guess for as long as they were issued the grey greatcoat. Martin

Help with a Metal Modeles figure painting

The figure could be painted as a hussar (change the device on the sabretache) but the horses shabraque is wrong. Other ranks used a sheepskin, officers used the pointed cloth shabraque. I have found a picture of a trooper using the cloth shabraque but he is wearing a shako.

Yes but I think you may have to remove the eagle from the shabraque

    Masterson's wet palette

I use baking parchment as it isn't coated, over here that's called "grease proof paper. I use air tight food containers measuring about 6"x 6" and have different ones for blues, reds etc. I wanted to see how long a paint mix would last without drying. After a few weeks it had started to...

WIP Corporal of Horse, The Blues, 1897

I believe it actually originates with the Horse Guards (who became Life Guards in 1788) The Blues adopted the tradition when they became part of the household Cavalry. Officially that was 1830 but they had been acting as Household troops for some years before that. So I'm not sure of the date...

WIP Corporal of Horse, The Blues, 1897

The word Sergeant isn't used in the Household Cavalry. The insignia and titles have changed slightly over the years but at present. Lance Corporal = Two stripes and a crown. Lance Corporal of Horse = Three stripes and a crown (cloth on 2 dress) Corporal of Horse = Three stripes and crown...

How to harden Epoxy clay in 5 Minutes

I use a 100 watt lamp over a metal plate to cure milliput. Also if you've mixed a bit too much, you can slow down the cure by sticking it in the freezer. Martin

    Dirty cavalrymen and horse weathering.

It's also very noisy. If you watch the officers giving direction commands they wave their swords about. All you can hear are the horses around you. And yes you end up eating dust or mud! :)

Painting horse hair: how is it done?

Add "stripe" extends down from "star" and "snip" extends over end of muzzle, to face markings. "Pie" means black and white as in Magpie. Piebald is black and white. Skewbald is brown and white. "Coin marks" are dappling on non greys. "Stifle" the most ticklish part of a horse. Almost guaranteed...

Not Jocks, Borderers. :) They're all over Northumberland. The English "Border Horse" fought in France and Ireland but were useless at Flodden. Of course your wife might not be pleased if you killed her brother! :) Martin
