    WIP Iberian Warrior

For furs to look "alive" in miniature, you need fairly bright highlights. For oils, I would use the Cadmium colors (red, orange, yellow.) to highlight the fox fur. In larger scales, I used to add a very small quantity of mica or metallic powders to the final highlights. This gives the "sparkle"...

    Thinner for oils. Need help!

I never use a thinner with oils. Straight from the tube over an acrylic base.

Time to buy a new camera

Happy New Year, Wendy! I used a Sony DSC-W7 for the past 5 years or so. It is compact, has a macro feature, 7.2 megapixels. It takes great photos. If you look at back issues of Figurines, Historical Miniature, etc. All of my Show Report photos were taken with that camera. I also used it on a 2...

"Faux Metallics for Round Figures (without Metallic paint)"

Mike and Einion, I have to agree. Works well with flats, flat art and 25mm but it just doesn't achieve the realism necessary in larger scale. Plus, it is a very difficult technique to master. Much like attempting to depict velvet and fur on a painted 3d figure. There are techniques that can...

    Prussian Royal Guard, WIP

Arthur, I would cut down some of the white in the figure's left eye.

    Use of commercial parts

If it is going to be commercial, it must be 100% your work. Unless you are sculpting for a manufacturer who is providing parts from their line.

    MFCA 2007 Photos

I finished the 2007 MFCA Photos today. The prices are the same as for the 2006 Show: $17 for a DVD, $12 each for cds which there is a Volume 1 and a Volume 2. [email protected]

2007 MFCA Group picture & more

Hey Walt, It was great seeing you guys. The model was actually my girlfriend and Bill gave her the bust when it was finished. She is an Art History professor and is still amazed at how quickly he did it. The great part is it made the whole trip for her. So it won't be any problem getting her to...

Question on pinning White Metal Figures..........

I use the hard steel wire that they sell in the hobby shop for remote control aircraft. I pin pretty much everything I can except small pieces. I always use 5 minute epoxy for everything. Never have had any luck with the cyno glues on figures. I use JB Qwik which is the strongest epoxy...

MFCA 2006 Photo DVDs and CDs

I know the 2007 MFCA Show was just held. By the end of the month I should have Photo DVDs and CDs available. I have a DVD of the 2006 Show with over 300 high resolution JPEG images on it. These are setup shots and the same ones that appear in the magazine articles. These are very large images...

    Drying times

I avoid using turpentine with oil paints. As you have found out, they extend the drying times and typically the paint dries glossy. I prefer to use mineral spirits and an acrylic undercoat. I avoid matt varnishes also as I have had near disasters with most. If I have to use a matte overcoat, I...

    News from Latorre Models

The scar just dosen't look natural to me. Too curvy and way too long. He would have lost half his face with that kind of a wound. Looks more like a crack in the casting.

    Catch light

I never paint in catch lights unless the figure is depicted as being indoors. There are no catch lights in eyes when you are outdoors. Just my own preference.

How do you rate the judging at the shows?

We actually tried an exhibition with no competition several years ago in Williamsburg, VA. A really great area for a show. The problem is no one wanted to attend a show without a competition. Those of us who attended had a great time and it really made for a fun weekend. I was the seminar...

    Small SBS of a Oplita

Maurizio, That is going to be a great looking figure. I was wondering about the double crest on the helmet. Have never seen that before and wondering what was used as a reference. Thanks.

    Figure shops in Williamsburg, VA

Paul, I live inVirginia Beach and make a lot of day trips to Williamsbutg. The only hobby shops in the area are Hobby USA and Hungates. More art and crafts then hobby shops. Denbeigh Hobbys near Williamsburg is pretty good if you are into plastic kits. Other wise, mail order is the way to go...

    Siskin Miniatures

Just an observation, but I don't believe Normans typically wore beards.

    VP's Top Gun pilot

The coveralls are called a "g-suit." More like riding chaps. They are actually rubber bladders covered by cloth that inflatee under g-forces. There is a zipper at the waist and one on each leg that runs from the ankle to the top of the thight. There are laces behind each thigh and calf. There is...

    Art Girona

I read several eyewitness accounts which observed that Scottish officers had extremely long and flexible wrists from years of practicing with heavy broadswords.

    applying sheen to skin

I add a couple of drops of stand oil or Liquin to my basic flesh oil color. I never like using overcoats of any type because you never know how they will turn out, usally either too shine or dry with a white tone to them. I also add a drop for polished leather work. One techinique that I really...
