1/6th SAS Vietnam - Step 2 - Highlights

Hi Guys

Step 2 is now complete. All mid tone highlights have been painted in 2 coats of acrylic paint. Usually the mid tone highlight is the base colour with ivory, buff and a little Sunny Skin Tones added. Despite the size of this figure, the proicess of laying in the base coats and highlights has taken less than four days of solid painting.

I've now started to lay in the deepest shadows in thinned black paint, and I've started to camoflague his personal equipment, face and weapon.

He's starting to look back at me and follow me around the room

I´m thinking to make one of this for me in 1:35 scale. The figure is wonderful!

Judging by the photos -not the best way to judge a figure- I would like to see some definition between the eye and the eyebrow.
I think the hair is not sill finished...

Looking realy good so far tony,

Aussie SAS are super-professional and this soldiers looking the part big-time! The camo on the face,weapon and webbing look spot-on and the way his eyes scan his arcs even though his weapon is not in the shoulder is an authentic touch
Uniform looks good to me too.
All in all a labour of love.well done mate.

Thanks to each of you for your comments guys. They are very welcome .

As some of you have noticed the hair hasn't been done yet. I use the top of his head to hold the figure steady while I'm painting him, so it will probably remain unpainted until everything else is complete.

Even though he looks almost finished in the photos, I can assure you there is still a very long way to go.

If it helps, try to look at him as if he was a smaller scale figure. I'm painting him excactly the same way I would if he was a 54mm figure and apart from the physical bulk and weight of this figure, there's really no difference in doing larger scale figures (except the amount of paint you have to use!!).

Hi Tony

You,ve done an excellent job on the camo,even on the face.Would a little reddish colour to flesh out rims of the eyes go a miss?Just my opinion.

I like this figure very much and you are doing a great job on it.

I want to try and get hold of this figure, do you know if it is still availiable?........i would love to get this figure in 120mm, but i think the only way that would ever happen is to sculpt my own.

Keep up the great work, it is a massive job painting a figure of this size!

Thanks for your comments about this magnificent figure.

Mate, sorry to inform you that this is a limited edition sculpt, with only 500 made. They are all sold, mostly to SAS veterans, because the figure was a special commission to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the establishment of the SAS Regiment. It was only available to sale through the Regiment itself, so unless you know someone, chances are you've missed out.

I think the only way you'll get your hands on one is to sculpt it yourself

Thanks to the those of you who have pointed out things that still need to be improved with the painting. Please bare in mind, I'm still only on Step 3 of a 7 Step painting process, so there is still much to do, and many of the finishing touches (such as redness under the eyes Etc., are still to be done (but I will do them )

Man, that is a disapointment!.......i really wanted to get one, and after seeing the great work you are doing, i'm even more disapointed.

Oh well, better sharpen up my sculpting skills.

Keep up the great work Tony, i'll be watching this one unfold, superb subject, very, very rarely seen in any form of modelling, Aussie SAS!

simply great! Very interesting to see the equipment camoed! I like the idea of issuing limited edition figures depicting rare themes, eventhoug it's a special case, could be a little less limited

Hi Tony..some really great detail taking shape on a beautiful figure.

Don't be too concerned about the number of comments..sometimes it is difficult to put a meaningful comment together for a work in progress, as many members realize that you are working hard on the piece all the time and it's just good to watch it take shape...and we are all enjoying it..many just don't have the time to say anything, many more are un-registered guests but enjoy the thread all the same...but yes..we should all post more.

As for myself I am really looking forward to seeing how the face eventually looks when it's totally complete, as it's such an excellent sculpt with a great deal of expression in those eyes.

I'm certainly grateful for all the feedback and comments from Planeteers about my progress with this figure.

One of the features of these Naked Army figures is that the eyes are hollowed out. This does present a small problem when it comes to giving the eyes a natural sheen from different angles.

The solution, as explained to me by Alan Mackie (whose done several Naked Army figures before and has even converted a few) is to fill the eyes (once apainted) with a clear liquid that will dry and harden in the eye socket to fill out the eye ball.

I'm looking forward to this step, but that is towards the end. In front of my now is several days of intense highlighting to pick out the superbly sculpted surface details and provide some contrast to the shadows I've already laid in.
