Nice work on the face Phil.
I found that the sculpt was so good that it seemed to guide the brush.
I reckon the bulk of the hard work is now done but there's always something waiting in the shadows to trip you up!

The story of my bench life!:(

Cheers,
Andrew

Thanks everyone. I had another couple of hours on it this afternoon, so
Session 7 - I tidied up the edges of the budenovka around the face and undercoated the gymnastierka (shirt). There are a lot of options for the shade of these but I think it will end up much the same as the undercoat. I also undercoated the collar and main greatcoat. The collars are referenced as being "bottle green" but most of the photos of surviving garments of that era the collars look a faded olive - I guess after a century they would look a bit tired! The coat itself was a strange pinkish grey/brown (Vallejo don't do that shade:meh:) I'll do some experimental mixes next session. Here's Ivan so far...
Bol 90 1.jpgBol 90 2.jpgBol 90 3.jpgBol 90 4.jpg

With a clear run, I think a couple more sessions will se him done except for a decent plinth and plate. Might start Rollet next Nap!:woot:

Hi Phil!
I watch with interest the next painting of this iconic figure. But I can not refrain from criticism: in my opinion the "conversations"(разговоры) seem too straight is unnatural. What should they look like? - I can't explain because of problems with the English language. And, it seems to me, it is not quite appropriate to paint under the ОГПУ, since this romantic character is clearly at the time of the civil war - and then the appropriate uniform was not yet issued. But, this is my personal opinion.
Already now I see a high-quality painting of the most interesting topic and I continue to hope that one bust on the same topic will also be painted in a high-quality way: https://www.planetfigure.com/threads/revolutionary.114634/
Perhaps it will be you?
Sincerely, Vitaly Sevalnev.

Thank you Vitaly - I much appreciate your comments and critique. I think you are right - the "razgovory" are the wrong shape. My knowledge of the uniforms of the period is based on published pictures which may not tell the whole story. My aim was to paint something a little different. I accept it may not be accurate but each work is a step on the ladder. I have a way to climb yet:D

Vitaly's pertinent comment above prompted me to re-visit the tabs on the front of the greatcoat. I will do some reconstructive surgery next session and post some pics of the result. I'm also aware that the colourscheme may be open to debate, but I have an open mind on that. Quote "there is always something waiting in the shadows to trip you up" (see above)

Thank you Vitaly - that is very useful and I much appreciate your time in doing this. I will make the adjustments next session.(y) I also note the colours of the "shinel" vary a lot in the attached photo, as does the lining. Good stuff!

Session 7.5
Following on from Vitaly's very useful contribution, I have remade the closure tabs on the guy's greatcoat. Made from rolled Miliput and trimmed to shape against a plasticard template. The replacements look a lot more like the ones in Vitaly's photo
Tabs.jpgTabs on.jpg

I just need to trim the back edges of the lower two to conform with the curve of the bust. I think they'll look a lot better once painted and blended in.

Hi Phil

Nice putty work there , interesting Inthink this is the only version where the shapes of the tabs has been commented on it makes the piece

Look forward to seeing more on this

Happy benchtime

Really nice work, Phil. I like the colour you've mixed for the greatcoat collar, & those fastener tabs look great now you've reworked them on Vitaly's advice - great spot & guidance from him.

Right - session 8 - last paint jobs
I have repainted the tabs and I think they look OK. In removing the duff ones I lost some paint on the greatcoat lapel, and as I wasn't entirely satisfied with the grey mix I had used, I did another colour mix which I am more comfortable with. I did some final touch ups and highlights on the gymnastierka and I think it is about finished.

I've just got to give it a coat of matt clear lacquer, base it up and add a plate, and I'll declare it completed in the appropriate forum. Thanks for following it and for your kind comments. You're probably fed up with seeing it - I know I am:LOL:

Phil

Hi Phil

That certainly looks different to what I imagined , do like the tabs with the edging colour

Been fun following this ....it's always good to finish a piece

Thanks for sharing

Happy benchtime
