morning all...firstly a question?..please the scarf of office worn by the British Para Chaplians, what is the correct name for this item, the colour and the ends of the scarf look like..?this will be a seperate item that will clip onto the figure if required, plus a small Bible in his right hand...
l appreciate the photos Cob,and your good thoughts Anthony..

Cheers folks..phil...

The correct name for the "scarf" is a tippet. If I remember correctly it's purple, with the RAChD cap badge embroidered on either end.
They also wore the red cross armband.
Carl.

evening all..Tony, Andy, wee ways to go as yet with him, its a must that l get him correct..
Carl thanks cobber for your help, felt a little odd calling it the Chaplians scarf all the time. l,d gone and put a cross at each end,..thanks once again...
l,d like to see him out there brother, i think Greg likes the idea as well...
cheers guys..Phil..

Lovely job and nice setting for this figure mate, i like how you have brought that destructed part of church into the scene and he has a very nice looking 1940`s haircut which befits an officer and Padre.

One thing you may need to check on is the flap on the back of the Denison smock, when i sculpted my Arnhem para it was something that a very keen collector of british para uniforms pulled up on my figure, like you i had the flap pinned up at the back and apparently there was no fitting for it to be kept in that position, it either hung down or in many cases was cut off after landing. It was on later smocks that retention clips were added so it could be pinned up onto the rear bottom of the smock.

Not sure if anyone else has any opinion on this fact or maybe can provide definitive proof as im only going by another persons information.

Great bit of work mate and a nice twist on the Arnhem theme.

All the best cobber

Morning Steve,..
mate cheers on that,l will rerat my books on his back flap...l must say its a hard point to be positive on even with all the pictures, most show the two buttons flap hanging etc. etc., but if cut off its hard to pick..l,ve felt that correctness was easy to find, but what the man wore and how he wore things even the bloke himself scratches his head,??/he!he!.....back to the drawing board...do hope he fills a gap in the big picture...
greatly appreciated Steve..phil..

Hi Phil

Steve is quite right with his observations of the smock's tail piece. This appears to be a first pattern Denison smock (distinguishable by the woolen cuffs) and as such would not have had press studs on the back for holding the tail up - the tail would've hung down and went some way to giving the 'red devils' their name.

The second pattern smock did have two press studs at the rear but didn't have woolen cuffs but tightening tabs instead (although some individuals sowed on sock tops to keep out drafts!)

I can't make out from the photos if you done this as a modified officers smock with a full zip or if it only has the original half zip but there appears to be a 'notch' at the bottom front of the smock which makes me think its a full zip version - if not then there'd be no 'notch'.

I've got stacks of Airborne gear if you need me to photograph anything for your reference then just let me know.

I don't mean to waffle but you did say it was important to get this right.

Cheers

Matt

hi! Matt,....
mate your waffles are most welcome,..my chaplian has on an officers full zip D.smock notched at the bottom, socks on the cuffs, but also tabs (added extra perhaps) the back wiew shows the flap with two studs at the top,but dose not appear to be just hanging, more like folded under???...my imfo book is D Day paratroopers by Jean Bouchery and Phillippe Charbonnie, covering the British, Canadians, and French. its a historie and collections publication...its that bum tail thats got me confused,..as a chaplian and a wee older than the other Paratroopers he liked a few home comforts, eg socks on his cuffs.. mate any thing you have bum tails cut or uncut etc. l would greatly appreciate a coupleof pics......cheers Phil..

Phil I'll try to get some pics sorted out for this weekend if I can, I don't have any picture references showing the removal of the tail its just what I've heard from Vets I've met over the years.

However, if your chap is wearing a second pattern Denison then it would have two press studs at the back to keep the tail in place so no worries there. I can't make out the tightening tabs on the cuffs though, I'll take some pics to make sure we're both on about the same thing.

As a point of interest if this is the converted to full zip Denison, the zip was taken from the Parachutists oversmock but the zip was about 2-3" longer than the smock so this extra bit would hang down at the front! Usually officers conversions were a rather neater finish but I just thought it was of interest (see pics - left 2nd patt with full zip, right is oversmock) I agree that your chap being a Chaplain would have a nicely finished smock.

Also note the tightening tabs on the sleeves.

Hope this is of use for now?

Cheers

Matt

morning Matt,..
mate l appreciate any imfo you can send..the tabs on the cuff are on the inner side of the sleve and can not be seen as he stands..lm going to extend the zip l like the detail it gives....Sculpting the Chaplian is working out most enjoyable, just enough in the subject to be away from the norm.....working on his Tibbet as we talk when l get onto the box art the colour contrasts may look smart...cheers Matt..phil.

Carl,mate,...
many thanks for read out..lt puts a new slant on how l see the completed piece..
Another question lf l may, the Tibbet, the length, lve made it so it passes under his web belt falling almost to the the bottom of his D.Smock. the reason l ran it under his belt l felt it may have been one way to stop it being caught in things as perhaps thats what l would have done were it me......
appreciate all this help guys...Phil..

Nice work Phil, makes a very nice figure of an unusual subject.
I believe the tribbet would be tucked into his belt and pulled out when needed, well its what you would do. However I wonder if he would keep it in his pocket due to risk of snipers but no I am sure a Sky Pilot would show his occupation proudly so keep it tucked into his belt.
Nice figure indeed

Don

Hello Don,...
mate l appreciate your thoughts....hopefully a sniper would think it was bad luck to shoot a chaplin, hopefully!!..perhaps l did not explain things properly, the Tibett comes around his kneck under his D.Smock collar with the edge just showing, comming down over his chest and under his webbing waist belt, ends hanging loose...but thats only how l see things...again Don thanks for your kind words..
...thanks for your help.. the wee man almost there.Phil....

Phil are you looking for a base station set, i.e HQ(non-portable as such) set or man pack set carried by troops ?

if man pack set i have some great pics of the 18 set that was used at Arnhem and also dimensions for it, took the pics from a reenactor event with intention of sculpting it one day.

Give me a shout if you need them heres a sample pic, i have pics form every angle with every detail for it, even batteries etc.
