Yes! I never really thought about it directly before, but you're right.

The blue ribbon, as some called it back then, was a sign of his rank as commanding general of the Continental Army. Major-generals and lieutenant-generals had their own colors, too, if I remember correctly. And looking now at various images-paintings, etchings, etc-I see the same thing. Either he wore the blue ribbon, or not. I'd bet that the times he didn't wear it, it was for convenience's sake. Washington understood ceremony, but he also knew that he was instantly recognizable, with or without his badge of rank.

I found only one illustration (here, stored at Alamy), which looks like a lithograph produced much later, and it shows Washington and other American generals wearing the same waist sash as their British counterparts, and all in a very dark red. I think it's artistic license.

I think you've made a good choice to add it, if I may say so. Looking forward to your next instalment!

Prost!
Brad

Your comments are spot on Brad,
I've seen several illustrations of Continental Army Officers wearing the Burgundy Sash, and some of GW wearimg the " Blue Ribbon" as you have mentioned.
The main reason i decided not to include the blue Ribbon is the paintig of Rochambeau and Washington in front of the tent at Yorktown, but few illustrations show GW with that blue ribbin.

I've layed the base color using scale 75 Abbysal blue.
The hat base color is scale 75 graphene grey.
One of the details of the Illustrations i've posted clearly shows the difference in color from the vest, lapels and cuffs and the pants.
I layered the colors of the vest, lapels , turnbacks and cuffs usimg Vallejo’s Buff and a dab of Pro Acryl Golden brown.
The base color for the pants are Army Painter Tomb king Tan.

Looks good, nice detail with the breeches being a different colour to the vest and lapels. Both are nice rich colours that will.make this figure pop quite well and given who.he is that is as it should be.

Cheers Simon

Thanks Simon,
Even though this picture does not really show much of the difference between them since i took inside rather than outside.
Cheers my friend.

Hi Daniel

Nice start , good idea to have the variety, will add even more to GW when done

Really interested in the Pro Acryl paints .....how do you find using them ,what are colours like ?

Thanks for update

Have fun

Thanks Kev,
Pro Acryl is one o these paints i can say i am very very happy with, they have a creamy consistency , great coverage and vibrant colors, they are easy to thin.
I will compare them with Formula P3 in terms of liquid form and pigment intensity, they dry to a Flat finish.
The paint jar is very convenient.
Give it a try!

Hi Daniel

Like those facings ..did you use a touch of yellow in the mix ?

Nice work on the blue especially the seams

Look forward to seeing more on this iconic subject

Happy benchtime

The contrast between the facing colours and the coat blue is very striking. Like Kev said the coat details around the seams are exceptional, I also like the shading around the row of buttons on the coat lapels.

Cheers Simon

Thanks Mate,
I do normally don't use washes for lapels, but in this case i decided to use Vallejo umber wash over the basr color and highlighted the edges with ice yellow.
Best regards.

Great work on the yellow, Ice Yellow is a very useful colour I find. Considering the size of your figures and that you mixed two types of putty there must be a fair amount of wastage because there is a limit to how little you can mix unless you have really tiny hands.
My old putty palette, it got a bit unwieldy so I started a new one but somehow I don’t want to get rid of this one!

Cheers Simon
