I've been research the uniform of the 41st NY Infty (ACW) for a conversion and need clarification of the color of the uniform jacket. I have seen both grey and green. I'm not reference the later NY state jackets, but the first issue jackets.

There is a website based in the states called 'Authentic Campaigner' or similiar. If they don't know - then I don't know who will. Try there first. They are very helpful people and you'll probably be inundated with answers. Le tus know how you get on.

Matt,

According to Troiani's "Regiments and Uniforms of the Civil War" the 41st N.Y., De Kalb Regiment, 2nd Yaeger Regiment wore a green jacket trimmed in red and gray trousers w/ red piping. The kepi appears to be green w/ red band.

The jacket is identical to the Prussian uniform being issued at the time. There cartridge box's are the same as the Prussian's and their knapsacks may have been as well. If you have Bill Horan's F-P war accessories you could use those (cartridge box's ) for a conversion. At the start of the war they carried the 1842 Springfield musket.

It would make an attractive figure and I plan on building a figure myself of this type in the near future.

Anthony, That website is one of the causes of my confusion.

Jason, I have the Troiani plate of this subject, and maybe it's just my copy (I don't have the book), makes the jacket look the same grey as the pants (same for the kepi). I planned on using Bill's FPW accessories once I figured out the approriate color. The basis for the conversion will be a Hecker/Goros FPW Prussian. Thanks also for posting the type of arms (needed that too)

Matt,

Here's a New York City newspaper account (from the Troiani book) on their appearance.

The dress consists of a dark green frock coat, trimmed with red on the collars and cuff, gray pantaloons, trimmed with a red cord, and clothe caps of the same color as the coats faced with red. The troops are also provided with an overcoat of gray pilot cloth, made after the Prussian Army regulation; in fact, the complete outfit of the regiment is on the plan of the Prussian Army. The knapsack are to be of the most approved style, being sloped, so as to fit on the hollow of the back, and of a size and weight to contain a good store of outfit-the officers' uniforms are precisely the same as that of the men, with the only distinction of their shoulder straps and the lace on their caps"

You may want to add a little dark gray to your green mixture to give it a dull green look. Atleast thats how it appears in Mr. T's book.
