I've always had excellent results with stippling Winsor Newton Paynes Grey. Very light mind you! (in effect drybrushing by stippling). You can always add more in different areas of the beard as you go along.

best of luck!

any prefered method of 5 o'clock shadow in oils
Any particular scale Norm? I would also stipple it on for larger scales but for smaller scales I think it's better to paint it on smoothly.

Either way I think it can be helpful to apply it wet-in-wet, by painting the area lightly in the basic flesh mix and then working the shadow mix into it. In addition to helping with blending this also helps overcome a common problem where the mixed colour is a lot darker on the figure than it looked on the palette!

What color do U use for 5 0'clock shade on blonde?
Some blonde men wouldn't have much in the way of visible beard shadow, but where it does show I would use something like Raw Umber (or a mix of similar colour, it's very easy to make) or a light sienna-type colour, depending on the shade of blonde.

anyone have close up pics of the techniques . wow I dont want much do I. lol
Try it on something - best way to learn! It's not terribly difficult to get a good result with a bit of practice, it's a pretty forgiving technique using oil paint. The hardest part should be mixing the right colour, not the application (y)

If you run into difficulty you can always use one of the great features of oils, the slow drying, to good effect - take the paint off completely and start again or just thin the coat down by dabbing with a clean brush or cotton swab.

Once the flesh colour is dry I use a thin wash of poppy oil with a bit of blue-black and raw umber in it. Apply to the beard area and feather out the top edge onto the face. Dry in the oven.:coffee:
